Avidemux add black borders filter?

Hi.

Can anybody tell me what is the purpose of the Add Black Borders,
and the Blacken Borders filter?

If you know, please explain in detail.

Do they increase picture quality,
or do they just fix picture aspect ratio?

Addborders just adds a black borders to a video. The picture quality is not affected. You can use it for example to make letterboxed 4:3 video of a 16:9 source.

The main reason for this is that Video-DVD only supports 4:3 and 16:9, both must be stored anamorphic at 720x576 (PAL) or 720x480 (NTSC).

Now what if you have a clip that isn't 16:9 but 2.35:1 (or something like that) and was cropped perfectly? You could "stretch" it back to 16:9, but that wouldn't look good.

So you need to add black borders to compensate...
