Avidemux 2.5 - Java ?

I have been using Avidemux 2.5 qt_4 to do mpeg to mpeg re-encode (install file mpegavidemux_2.5.0_win32.exe)

it was working well untill I installed Java - (jxpiinstall-6u13-fcs-bin-b03-windows-i586-09_mar_2009.exe),


now I cant use "any" of the mpeg2 re-encoders ( I can do a stream copy, and convert to avi etc ) the programe crashes out with no error message.

I have un-installed Java - restarted machine - did not help.

un-unstalled and reinstalled Avidemux - did not help.

Anyone got an idea of whats going on.?

Avidemux is not related to Java at all! Even if you noticed the problem first after installing Java, the problem must be something else ;)

Please download the latest Avidemux (v2.5 r5204) here and try again:

yeh just tried that, I was using 4944,
I am getting same thing, it just crashes out, no error message at all. I can convert the same file to Avi formats.

what dll does it use, I could not see an mpeg dll in the "videoEncoder" directory.

does the programe use any dependents, (ie quicktime), not mentioned.

I did not think java had anything to do with it, but its after that the mpeg2 encoding stoped, so I mentioned it.

My guess would be "libADM_vidEnc_avcodec.dll" (libavcodec/ffmpeg).

No, it doesn't! No QuickTime, no DirectShow, no Video for Windows :sly:

As said before, there is absolutely no relation between Avidemux and Java.

I can't see any crash information in your log. Sure this is the log right after Avidemux crashed/disappeared?

Yeh I could not see any either, which is why I got confused, if I knew what, I could fix it.

The file is as follows

(DVBt - 720x576 TS mpgeg ) ->PVAStrumento -> ( PS mpeg)
loaded into Avidemux -> Cut out Adds etc -> Audio/video stream copy ->> "new file"

(fine up to here)

load "new file" to Avidemux - Select AC3 sound, Select Mpeg2 encoder ( not the stream copys ) - select Mpeg-A/V-PS container
press "save video" , select file name, press ok

the logfile says the rest. - gets to setting up the video stream and quits.

I have tried all the other Mpeg2 encoders, they did not work,
even did an Video stream copy with an AC3 sound convert, that worked fine.

its when I try to do an mpeg2 re-encode, it goes whacky and quits. there is no error report , except from the OS.

Its not just that file, I had tried it with 3 mpegs, just tried it with an avi, not of my making.
and its thrown an exception.

Sorry took so long to reply bin helping other with something entirly differnt.

1. Why do you first cut in "Copy" mode when you are going to re-encode later anyway? You could cut and re-encode in one step.

2. Why do you re-encode to MPEG-2, when your source apparently already is in the MPEG-2 format?

3. I don't know why Avidemux crashes when you encode to MPEG-2. I successfully encoded a huge number of Video-DVD's with Avidemux in the past :confused:

4. It seems Avidemux crashes the "hard" way. That's why you see the error box from the OS and why there's no stacktrace in the log...

5. Can you provide a sample file to re-produce the crash?

1. so I can do quick cuts on lots of files in one go and then re-encode them later, when Im not using the comp, cos it takes time.

2. The Mpegs are not DVD complient (GOPs up to 52 frames ), not ac3/ACC audio and do have frames missing, odd sound drop ..etc.
so I re-encode to get rid of all errors before drop them onto a DVD, when I have engh files to fill one.

3. Worked fine for me also until this, I was happy with it ........... the only thing I did between working / not working was the Java.

4. I sometimes get an exception report from the os, but I cant copy the text and I dont know where windows puts it.

5. Its doing the same with all files and types , even files I encoded with it before, but just on mpeg2 encode. its a general prob not a file specicific.

Hmmm, you could use VMMap (http://technet.microsoft.com/de-de/sysinternals/dd535533(en-us).aspx) to check whether any unusual "third party" DLL's are injected into the Avidemux process.

The next step would be to run Avidemux in a debugger and see what happens...

Well, "file format" is a bit unspecific, especially for inexperienced users.

In fact many people don't understand that there is a difference between the file format ("container") and the format of the audio/video streams stored inside that container.

Companies, like the one who is selling us ASF files (that contain WMV and WMA streams) as "WMV files", do their best to spread even more confusion...

I understand the concept, and agree it is a better "description" of the now "file" types which contain variouse data chunks, as oppossed to the old fixed data types and structures I used to use, it just happened in the gap I was not watching.

Got VMMap , have run it, cant see any other codecs or dlls, except form avidemux.

Nope. You need a debugger, such as gdb (http://sourceforge.net/projects/mingw/files/GNU%20Source-Level%20Debugger/Release%20Candidate_%20GDB%206.8-3/gdb-6.8-mingw-3.tar.bz2/download) (GNU Source-Level Debugger). Then run Avidemux until it crashes and make a stacktrace.

It would be more helpful to use a Debug build of Avidemux, but you would need to make that yourself from the sources...

ok do you have a link for the most appropriate gdb for win32 (XP-Pro)

I cant upload the save file from VMMap to pastie as its 130KB, (ziped 15KB, but it wont let me post that)

If there are no "unusual" DLL's listed in VMMap there's no need to post it here.

The VMMap thing was just an idea, because some tools inject their DLL's into other process, which may cause problems under certain circumstances.

Again: Avidemux isn't related to DShow, VfW, DMO or any other part of Windows Media platform.

Keep in mind that Avidemux was born in the Linux world and is developped as a cross-platform tool. It doesn't use anything that is specific to M$ Windows.

(BTW: There currently is no "offical" option to uninstall the Windows Media Player and its components, unfortunately)

There are numerous IDE's that can act as a (graphical) front-end to gdb. But gdb itself shouldn't contain any GUI code for simplicity, maintainability and portability.

IMO it's much better and more elegant to have numerous simple but efficient CLI tools - one for each task - and use GUI applications to combine these tools as needed.

Think of the Unix philosophy:
Write programs that do one thing and do it well. Write programs to work together. Write programs to handle text streams, because that is a universal interface.

Just tried it on my other comp. 1Ghz - same system setup (well OS anyway) it does the same thing there, beging to wonder about my system, and if I got an invasion, problem and this is how its manifesting. :(

I use my 2.8Ghz for vid convertion, for clear reasons.

Use this commandline:

Got it going.

since last post history...

it craped out my anivirouse -"Avria" ... reinstall ... run scan ... Ok ( no finds )

re-run gdb, load with prog ... run

different this time, it wont prosses the GUI, I press open it hangs, I press open again, i get "SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault" see below for details.

( The anitivirus running is ok now ?)

MSVCRT is the C Runtime Library and part of the Windows operating system. This really shouldn't be the source of the problem.

Nor I, its as much puzeling , as anoying ... well it looks like I need another mpeg2 encoder, pitty that did the stuff I needed to do.

Its weired as nothing else is doing the same thing, every thing else is actualy running fine.

and the nero mpeg2 encoders workin fine it also uses its own codecs, but its well slow around 2.5 X play time,
and will only do a stream copy (its automated), on a file it thinks is DVD compat, it wont re-encode.

As a note - It would not suprise me if the 2 computers sync updates from each other - identcal OS's......
