State of BluRay playback with Linux

Hi,
It's been very quiet in the recent month about this topic - so far I'm aware of this method (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/BluRayAndHDDVD), but it's not very convenient and only works with BluRays whose keys are known.
So will there a libbd+ or libaacs any time in the future? Can a Linux user be recommended to go and buy a BluRay drive yet?

i use pipe with dumphd :

(ps : i have an nvidia with vdpau codecs (for use Graphic card to read h264) ans i chose french audio with -aid 4353)

you can also use vlc like this :

./dumphd.sh --infile:BDMV/STREAM/00002.m2ts /media/cdrom | vlc -

Does this work with any disc, or at least with a majority of them?

If you have patch your drive it's work natively (and have mkb key in processkeydevice.txt) if you can't patch your drive . I have this methode

Install makemkv for linux and download dumpvid.exe

Shell 1

$wine dumpvid.exe --force-bd d 10


Shell 2

$makemkvcon info disc:0

you see in Shell 1 volume id harmering

now you have volume id lauch aacskeys

$aacskeys /media/cdrom <volumeid>


now you have volume unique id and the hash of the disc
past information in file KEYDB.cfg

<hash Disc> = name | v | <volume unique id>

What do you mean by patching the drive?

I'd like to bump this in order to ask whether there is yet an option to accomplish BluRay playback without patching the drive.
I've read about libbluray and another project whose name I do not recall - So my question again is:
What is the current state of the art in playing back BluRay with Linux?

Whilst my understanding of this issue is very basic, my experience is that, in general, it is possible to play blu-ray titles under linux that use MKB 10 or less protection, as long as the vuk is available, which most of them seem to be. :)
For titles that use MKB 11 to 14 we are currently out of luck, as far as I know, but no doubt these matters are being worked on.
I use dumphd-0.61 and aacskeys-0.4.0c. so other methods ( or people with more skills than me ) may well be able to do better.
Things keep changing and each persons skills, experience and persistence play a part as well, so there is no really straight forward answer to your question.

I can confirm that it works for standard DVDs under debian unstable :) Dont have bluray to test yet though.

i know this isnt what you mean, but i bought an lg blu-ray player and the manual says it runs on a busybox installation of linux.

so at least there is a proof of concept.

MakeMKV 1.4.10 for linux can play a MKBv 12 title I have (Woodstock) so maybe it can play blu-rays with MKBv 13 and 14 protections as well. (I don't have any to check it with.)

Another interesting tidbit: With the experimental feature, you can browse to the LAN address with a hardware player like a popcorn hour. So for people like me, who have a popcorn hour and a new LG BD-ROM, MakeMKV is a godsend.

Starting with version 1.4.8 MakeMKV supports BD+ portected discs, as long as disc-specific BD+ key is known in form of SVQ file. Please see http://www.makemkv.com/svq/ for the latest combined SVQ file. As for now this page contains no SVQ files but it contains instructions for sending us necessary information to create an disc-specific SVQ file. Most likely generic SVQs will not be released for the beta version.
