Hey, I'm new here. ;) What are some good programs to convert DVD to AVI? The Doom9 guides are dated, written in a time when people used a hack called Divx 3.1 ;) and an ancient kludge called Gordian Knot.
I just tried FormatFactory and it doesn't drop 29FPS to 24FPS for film. It didn't crop the black bars. And, it apparently doesn't support quality-based encoding of Divx/Xvid, just fixed file-size and fixed-bitrate.

He joined October 2001, this is the same month Doom9 'joined'! I guess so far he was more interested in MPEG-2 instead of MPEG-4.

With no answers forthcoming, may I suggest to anyone looking for a decent, modern DVD-to-AVI program, HandBrake. I'll look for a couple more.

Hi,
A post I made a few weeks ago:

I would'nt use handbrake for x264 (rather ripbot) but for xvid handbrake (or Autogk) would be fine as starting apps.
After that it depends on your needs, time you want to involve , learning curve, xvid only or evolution towards x264 etc...

I would'nt use handbrake....Personally, I wouldn't use any application that only allows you place streams within the .AVI container
