HELP! Trying to play an avi that uses H.264/AVC Codec

So firstly, I had an mkv file that I extracted, came out as a .avi. Then I used GSpot to determine the codecs I needed to play it were H.264/AVC so I went through about 3 guides online, re-installing and uninstalling previous codecs, but I STILL can't play any .avi files encoded with h.264. The files aren't currupted since they all play in VLC and in their original mkv forms, so why not as .avi? I checed my ffdshow settings and it is supposed to be able to decode h.264 but for some reason it doesn't. Any tips or anything would be much appreciated. Thanks

AVC breaks AVI in many cases, so never have AVC in AVI

Err okay so I converted it to mp4, but there is major quality loss. :S

Remuxing doesn't cause quality loss.

Correct me here if I'm wrong, but by "converting" it sounds like you literally transcoded the avi to a mp4.

The proper way is to download mp4box, and use it to remux (transfer the video and audio contents) the avi to a mp4.

avi and mp4 are just container formats, so you are literally just taking the video/audio out of one (avi) and putting it in another (mp4). Should take a couple of minutes max.

How did you produce these AVIs? Are you sure you got valid AVI files? AFAIK no tool could directly remux AVC+audio from mkv to avi.

If you got valid AVC in AVI files, they should play with VLC, mplayer, MPC-HC and any other media player that supports AVI and AVC.

ffmpeg and anything that uses it's muxers can. It may or may not be a broken stream after, but it can.

Thanks for the helpful tips guys but I'm still pretty confused. :(

First I tried MP4Box and that is really confusing, I have no idea what to do. It just opens a black screen and disappears. I read online that I had to do some things in command prompt, I tried and that still didn't seem to work.

Then I downloaded YAMB, which seemed like a simple enough program but everytime I try to demux the file it tells me regex2.dll was not found and shuts down the program. I tried googling a solution and couldn't find anything.

Lastly I went to the FFmpeg and well, I couldn't even get as far as downloading the program, I have no idea what to download it's so confusing. -__-

This all started from me trying to open these video files in Ulead Video Studio to make an AMV, and I've been tossed around several solutions and none seem to work, I'd reaaaallly appreciate it if someone could kind of guide me or something thoroughly as to what exactly I need to do to demux these files to .mp4 or something else that won't lose quality. I'd be sooo very thankful!

Ulead wouldn't open mkv so I extracted the avi from it, but the avi won't play on anything except VLC (I have the h.264 codec btw). And now I'm trying to demux the mkv to an mp4.

Err I see. Well in general I'd still like to know how to mux mkv's to mp4. :/
