I am new to using MeGUI and x264 encoding. My automated 2pass encodes go without problems. But am now curious how do you use the automated 3pass option? When I tried it all went well till the last pass and it said the file xxx.264 already excidts do I want to over write it? This makes sense as it creates the 264 file on the 2 pass. But I thought the process was going to be automated? What am I doing wrong how do you use it? I know it is not really needed, but am just curious how to use it.

Also in settings extra config tab... there is a number of passes option ... a overwrite stats file option and a keep 2nd pass opt in 3rd pass mode... Do they have something to do with the msg am getting?

I would like to know how to use this option just to know. ThankYou

1. Don't use 3 pass, it's practically useless.;)

2. Yes, overwrite the .264 file.

3. The stats file should be "created" during the first pass, read & updated during the second pass, and only read during the last pass. I don't know why the stats file would be over-written in the third pass (unless it means --pass 3 which would actually be used during the second pass; that would make sense). Keep 2nd Pass output in 3 Pass mode should keep the encoded video from both the second and third passes, and should not produce the message you mentioned.

It is commonly accepted that a 3rd pass will not give you a noticeable increase in video quality or size reduction. What megui profile are you using?

I don't know why the stats file would be over-written in the third pass

For a 4th pass, it does not matter.

I am using Sharktooth's x264 profiles from this site. http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=101813

It is not asking me if I want to overwrite the stats file but the video fire it made in the second pass. how do I automate either A) yes go and overwrite it or B) append ### to the file name or something and use that.

It is not asking me about the stats file but if I want to overwrite the .264 file it created in the 2 pass. So I was wondering how to automate either A) yes go and overwrite the file and/or B) No do not overwrite the video file appand ### or something to the file and call it that.

Isn't there is some checkbox in that dialog, something like "do not ask this next time"?. Don't know about renaming previous file but if you decided to do 3rd pass, why you need to keep output from 2nd pass? The only reason I see is for some testing like comparing visual quality, but you can do this manually. Edit: there is option "keep 2nd pass output in 3pass mode". This is not what you want?

I do not know I'll have to re-encode with the same options to find out.. But surely that is not very automated if the first time round I check I box not to ask me again and to just overwrite it. Then what happens if monthes later I want it to ask me again... I just can not remember if that was even n option.. As I said I'll have to re run the ecode

what Sharktooth x264 profile?

I can guarantee that you will get a better quality encode using different encoding settings (--preset placebo) from 1/2 passes than from the settings you use now for 3 passes.
