DVD-Audio playback on PS3?

Considering that CPPM has been cracked long time ago;
PS3 can read DVD-ROM discs, and DVD-Audio discs are basically just a flavour of DVD-ROM with CPPM and with particular audio files in specific folders;
PS3 can handle 5.1-channel, 24-bit, 96/192 kHz PCM (internally and on the HDMI output);
PS3 must be able to decode MLP since it can handle Dolby TrueHD (which is based on MLP) one would think that DVD-Audio playback on PlayStation3 must be technically feasible.
For instance by porting DVD-Audio Explorer to the PS3's Linux environment. Unfortunately my own programming skills are extremely poor and dusty so I can't prove it.

Is there anyone else who also thinks this must be doable?

I think playing encrypted discs is not feasible. The encryption requires you to get the volume ID from the drive, but under PS3 Linux, that is not possible.

Ah, that's a pity, because it looks quite unlikely anyone will create and release such software in the XMB environment.

If we assumed the DVD-Audio license/royalty were handled (and covered by a sales price) do you think it would be feasible to a commercial piece of software that lets PS3 play DVD-Audio titles in the XMB environment?

I would think it's unlikely that Sony will ever provide DVD-A capability in the PS3 since they supported SACD for lossless audio.

But it made me think since I enjoy SACD's on my PS3 and it would be good to listen to my DVD-A collection.

Not exactly an easy process and not all the tools are available yet but something like this could work

1. Rip the DVD-A using DVDAExplorer into mlp files
2. Convert the mlp files to Dolby TrueHD using the under development Google Summer of code project open source encoder
3. Author the TrueHD files to the m2ts format using tsmuxer
4. Create an AVCHD formatted DVD using MultiAVCHD
5. Burn to a DVD as UDF 2.6

Theoretically should work but tools for step 2 haven't seen the light of day yet. Note that step 2 could be replaced with an encode to DTS HD Master since that is also lossless but I am not aware of anybody working on an open source DTS HD Master encoder and the commercial product is big bucks.

Interesting, but I was rather thinking of a solution that would take the burden away from the end user.

I wonder if a third-party software publisher would develop a DVD-Audio playback program for PS3 with the intent to sell it through the official PSN channel (and they'd taken care of the required DVD-Audio license etc.), would Sony allow it?

The recent cracking of PS3 by 'geohot' (George Hotz of iPhone unlocking fame) may very well pave the way for the sort of DVD-Audio hack I'm hoping for.
