Right now i am happy with xvid, it needs 50% more bitrate to look ~the same as x264, 100% to be the same but i want to make it better, my settings :

set xvidsettings=-progress 10 -i %myavs% -stats "%mypath%\%mpath%\T2\%mymovie%.stats" -bitrate %btratexvid% -max_key_interval %kint% -threads 3 -overhead 0 -nopacked -vhqmode 4 -closed_gop -bvhq -framerate %myfps%

start "encode" /b /low /wait "%mypath%\bin\xvid_encraw.exe" -pass1 %xvidsettings%
echo.
echo Encoding XVID 2'nd Pass :
echo.
start "encode" /b /low /wait "%mypath%\bin\xvid_encraw.exe" -pass2 %xvidsettings% -avi "%mypath%\%mpath%\T2\%mymovie%.avi"

The bitrate i use now is something like :

if %myres% GEQ 160 GOTO A1
:A1
if %myres% LEQ 639 GOTO A2
if %myres% GEQ 640 GOTO B1
:B1
if %myres% LEQ 799 GOTO B2
if %myres% GEQ 800 GOTO C1
:C1
if %myres% LEQ 959 GOTO C2
if %myres% GEQ 960 GOTO D1
:D1
if %myres% LEQ 1023 GOTO D2
if %myres% GEQ 1024 GOTO E1
:E1
if %myres% LEQ 1279 GOTO E2
if %myres% GEQ 1280 GOTO F1
:F1
if %myres% LEQ 1919 GOTO F2
if %myres% GEQ 1920 GOTO G1
:G1
if %myres% LEQ 2560 GOTO G2
:A2
SET btrateX264=2500
SET btrateXVID=4000
if EXIST "%mypath%\%mymovie%3D.avi" SET btrateX264=5000
if EXIST "%mypath%\%mymovie%3D.avi" SET btrateXVID=8000
GOTO END
:B2:
SET btrateX264=3000
SET btrateXVID=4500
if EXIST "%mypath%\%mymovie%3D.avi" SET btrateX264=6000
if EXIST "%mypath%\%mymovie%3D.avi" SET btrateXVID=9000
GOTO END
:C2:
SET btrateX264=3500
SET btrateXVID=5500
if EXIST "%mypath%\%mymovie%3D.avi" SET btrateX264=7000
if EXIST "%mypath%\%mymovie%3D.avi" SET btrateXVID=11000000
GOTO END
:D2
SET btrateX264=3800
SET btrateXVID=6500
if EXIST "%mypath%\%mymovie%3D.avi" SET btrateX264=7600
if EXIST "%mypath%\%mymovie%3D.avi" SET btrateXVID=13000000
GOTO END
:E2
SET btrateX264=4000
SET btrateXVID=7000
if EXIST "%mypath%\%mymovie%3D.avi" SET btrateX264=8000
if EXIST "%mypath%\%mymovie%3D.avi" SET btrateXVID=14000000
GOTO END
:F2
SET btrateX264=4500
SET btrateXVID=8000
if EXIST "%mypath%\%mymovie%3D.avi" SET btrateX264=9000
if EXIST "%mypath%\%mymovie%3D.avi" SET btrateXVID=16000000
GOTO END
:G2
SET btrateX264=6000
SET btrateXVID=12000000
if EXIST "%mypath%\%mymovie%3D.avi" SET btrateX264=12000
if EXIST "%mypath%\%mymovie%3D.avi" SET btrateXVID=24000000
:END

I would like to get it loking great at 50% more bitrate than xvid, maximum.

What settings could i change ?

What version could i download to get auto threads, with 1.2.2 stable from xvidvideo.ru the threads are not automated ( 1.3.0 are but that is not stable )

thnx, cheers.

any reason for your aversion to using x264?

you're basically limited by the xvid codec not the settings used. It would be like me trying to get an mpeg1 stream looking as good as an xvid video using only 50% more bitrate.

if its not possible no problem, just asking.
