Ripping a Marvin Gaye concert I've noticed (appart from being interlaced) an almost constant banding effect on the images as shown below.

Is there any way to remove or minimice this effect
This may have been caused by some sort of electromagnetical interference, simmilar to the ones caused by a powerfull electric engine connected to the same power line as the TV

Do the lines move? If so, maybe you could use temporal denoising to try to get one band of color instead of many.

It's not tape, at least not VHS.
Use a better insulated coax cable and a better connector. A ground lift device (quite expensive, like 15-20€) might solve also this problem.

lol. i'd say that crap happened the day they shot it.
often with concert footage you get wavy patterns of various kinds when the camera (or elements of it) resonate with the extremely loud live sound.
is it all the way through, or does it correspond to certain notes in the music?
if it is a constant thing you could remove it by "adding the opposite" using photoshop and some educated guessing (then overlay() or similar in avisynth). if it corresponds with the music you're s**t out of luck, but you may have some success with chroma filtering (fft3dfilter's bt=0 might help at a strong setting). this will likely nuke a lot of good chroma, but this looks like it's come from 2-inch tape, so there's probably no good chroma left anyhow.

DeFreq or FanFilter might be good places to start. i'd forgotten about those. they are designed to remove specific frequencies, so that might be exactly what you need.

Hi,
Horizontal and vertical interferences are hard to remove with defreq or FanFilter. Usually many details are lost and gosthing can appear. Perhaps previous motion compensated bobbing can help. Anyway if you upload a sample clip our help could be more complete.

The source material is an original DVD being watched on a LCD PC screen so the interferences happened at shooting time.

The pattern is stronger on certain high pitch / loud sounds, so I'm quite SOL.
motion compensated bobbing
Since I'll deinterlace, it may reduce the interference. Maybe deinterlacing + defreq/fan will work, just maybe.

Wikipedia had this to say about Vidicon video camera tubes:
Vidicon tubes are notable for a particular type of interference they suffered from, known as vidicon microphony. Since the sensing surface is quite thin, it is possible to bend it with loud noises. The artifact is characterized by a series of many horizontal bars evident in any footage (mostly pre 1990) in an environment where loud noise was present at the time of recording or broadcast. A studio where a loud rock band was performing or even gunshots or explosions would create this artifact.
But apparently the effect "doesn't exist" so it's gone from the article ;)
