View Full Version : MflowFPS parameters for variable content

I'm using MflowFPS to take TV programmes with the "fake film look" (50i converted by the broadcaster to 25p) and make them look like video (back to 50i again!).

On some programmes, where there are no MflowFPS artefacts, the results are perfect. e.g. There's a BBC One programme called Casualty which had the "fake film look" applied a year ago - using MflowFPS makes it look exactly like it used to - true 50i video rules!


The problem is, there are artefacts - sometimes quite hideous ones - and on fast moving content they're quite frequent.

I'm just processing the content overnight, watching it, and then deleting it - so I don't want to spend time tweaking parameters for each scene or even each programme.

I've tried the "best quality" example from the MVTools website (overlap=4 search=3), and the results when, for example, a person walks past a door frame are really bad. I've tried default parameters (i.e. no parameters) and get unpredictable blips in the image, and some small-ish items get unchanged (i.e. no motion interpolation). I've tried the "fast" example from the MVTools website, and I get blockiness.

(In general - I get at least some of all of these problems with all the settings I've tried - the frequency and severity vary though).


Has anyone found a combination of parameters that they are happy to throw at anything for viewing purposes. Doesn't have to be real time - I have to re-encode before watching on my current slow PC!


(I know they'll be problems with really high movement scenes - but moderate movement also causes problems when one thing moves past another thing - in fact it's only fairly slow movement, and/or things moving over plain backgrounds, which work well).

I don't know what you're trying to suggest. You want to make up frames out of nowhere and you're complaining about artifacts? I think what you need is a perspective adjustment.

doubling framerate always means many artifacts. they're unavoidable.

now, if you had access to the best framerate-conversion system in the world, things would be different.
and you would be paying thousands of dollars.

I wasn't wishing to criticise the free MVtools v2 - I've used it a lot and appreciate it - I'm just wanting to find some better "general" settings for this use case.


But since you ask...

As a perspective adjustment: with the settings I've used, the artefacts from MVtools are far far far worse than you'd see on a Philips TV (which includes a feature to do a similar job).

Except that the Philips TV will automatically detect the frame repetition pattern in the input - even quite bizarre patterns (e.g. from bad NTSC > PAL conversions) - and take the bizarre sequence of fields, reconstruct frames, and then apply motion interpolation to give smooth motion.

The Philips TVs might cost a thousand dollars - but I doubt the little chip which does this processing adds more than a few tens of dollars to the cost. (Though the R&D budget to make that chip is impressive!).


I realise creating new frames is a challenge, but in terms of frame rate conversion, what I'm doing has the advantage of giving an output which is 50% original frames - and where a simple fall-back to frame blending would not introduce any more stutter than was present originally. PAL>NTSC conversion doesn't have either of those advantages.


More importantly, I know full well that standards conversion hardware runs to tens of thousands of pounds - but there's a thread here with fairly successful standards conversion advice. I'm asking about a job which is done in TVs for a few tens of dollars, so it's not unreasonable to hope for similar advice, is it?

The problem is that the motion detection algorithm in MVTools2 is simply too crude to expect good results. No matter how you ask, you're not going to get much better results than you're already getting.

maybe try MotionProtectedFPS?

there may be a slight increase in quality...
