View Full Version : Does MP4 support subtitles ?

Betsy25
17th July 2009, 09:29
Hi,

No matter how I try to create an MP4 file (using MeGUI), I add subtitle file (.srt) but the PS3 never detects them.

I have attached the MeGUI log file, could someone please help me out WHY the subtitles are not available on PS3 ?

Because the PS3 doesn't support subtitles in mp4 files.

DOH!

Didn't Sony tell us the PS3 can play MP4 files ?????????

I thought the MP4 standard supports subtitles ?

So the PS3 can't play MP4 also (wonders what it still can play:rolleyes: )

So, IIRC, there's no way the PS3 can play some h264 file with subtitles ? In no single way ?
P.S. I don't want to stream from PC.

Well it can't play everything you can stick into MP4. For instance AC3 is now allowed in an MP4 container, but the PS3 can't play it although it can obviously decode AC3 since it can play back DVDs. AFAIK the MP4 container only supports TTXT subtitles, but megui (mp4box) will automatically convert your srt files to that format when you mux them.
I never tried do to it myself, but I guess the PS3 supports subtitles when you put them into VOB or m2ts containers. You'll have to search the forum a bit if you want details.

Thanks nurbs,

Indeed, I created an MP4 using MeGUI, don't know if it added it as TTXT, MediaInfo tells this :
Text
ID : 3
Format : Timed text
Codec ID : tx3g
Duration : 1h 23mn
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : 81 bps
Stream size : 49.4 KiB (0%)
Title : Nederlands
Language : Dutch
Encoded date : UTC 2009-07-15 20:28:22
Tagged date : UTC 2009-07-15 20:28:22

... but no option to show subs on the PS3.
I'll try using the VOB or m2ts method, but then, which other tools do I have to install to be able to do that...

Sorry to bug you guys once again, but also using TsMuxer (created m2ts file), the PS3 only played the video correct, it didn't play the audio and it didn't play to subtitles.....

..... Up to mkv2vob........

nurbs

What kind of audio and subtitles did you try? I guess in m2ts you have to use blu-ray SUPs and a supported audio codec (e.g. AC3).

edit:
Maybe you should just give up and buy a WD TV (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=572) or something like that (Popcornhour,...). You can take your AVC, AAC and SRT, mux it to mkv and the box will play it without problems. It's also pretty cheap.

@Betsy25

Hi! Sorry to bug you guys once again, but also using TsMuxer (created m2ts file), the PS3 only played the video correct, it didn't play the audio and it didn't play to subtitles....For playback on a PS3, try using "tsMuxeR" to create an AVCHD "package" (Select "AVCHD" rather than "M2TS")...

Thanks setarip_old, I'll try it that way ! :o

EDIT: The AVCHD way doesn't work either. TsMuxer gives an error at the end of muxing.

TsMuxer gives an error at the end of muxing. What is the exact wording of the error message?

What is the exact wording of the error message?

TsMuxer finished with error code -2.
Unsupported media type 15 for AVCHD/Blu-ray muxing.

The file in your first post doesn't have the right resolution for Blu-Ray or AVCHD and you also need to encode with the --nal-hrd switch and change other settings as well.

OK, I tried with mkv2vob and now it works, sort of, unfortunately that is, it embeds the subs into to movie stream, something I hoped not to see, but anyway, it's better than nothing, since that bloody PS3 doesn't understand the word "subtitle" yet they dare to call it a "next-gen" console....

Yeah, last time I checked and tried, about 4 months ago, PS3 can't play subtitles from media files.

Only from DVD, Blu-ray and AVCHD.

Yes MP4 supports subtitles in .m4v (just change extension and it should work) but as above I don't think the PS3 accepts subtitles unless in DVD/BD (could be wrong).
