I was just doing some basic tests with HDconvertToX and MeGUI, when I noticed that there was a significant speed difference in the two of them. Further investigation revealed that HDConvertToX was using a 1162 with something called Kavaq patch I believe.

I was testing MeGUI with a vanilla x264 1173 from x264.nl.

Both the speeds and file sizes were different for the same exact encoding settings. Looking at the changelog, all I can see are optimizations as the main differences between the two.

For reference (rough numbers, but you get the idea), 1162 was chugging along at around 7.75fps, while 1173 was chugging along at around 6.12 and sometimes lower. File sizes were about 5.9 MB and 9.0 MB respectively.

I am just curious as to what the big difference is between the two.

How about you compare vanilla to vanilla, compiled with the same compiler, rather than just guessing that the "faster" one isn't patched with things that significantly change its defaults?

And where can I download a vanilla build of 1162?

It's "kAVAQ", which refers to AutoVAQ (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=147067). That's likely the cause of your observed change in average bitrate (which affects encoding speed).

(There only is r1160 and r1163 though, but this should be sufficient. If not, checking out r1162 and making a simple build yourself shouldn't be too hard ^^)

Okay, I am testing 1163, and it seems that DS was right to be filled with indignation.

1163-vanilla = 6.18 fps
1173-vanilla = 6.40 fps

Okay, than forgive my jumping to unintelligent conclusions. I wonder what kind of weird patch that Kavaq thingy is then.

Edit: Didn't see nm's post. That explains it then.
