Hi there.

It's been a while since i've last been here (a few years), although doom9 is my home page.

I guess i almost forgot the DVD Maestro/CCE/etc way of doing things.

But my question is that i'm starting to burn Dual Layer DVD+R and i'm getting coasters.

My burner is a NEC 3540A (latest firmware) and i've been using Ridisc Media - Manufacturer ID: CMC MAG D02 (000).

Since i've been burning DVD-R for years with 99,99% success, but i'm only trying Dual Layer Media recently, could you point me the good media ? By "good" i'm only meaning "more reliable".

I've been reading about Verbatim, but this is in very old threads.

Thanks for your kind help.

Verbatim DVD+R DL are still the only reliable DL media.

Try to get Made in Singapore discs.

Some feel the Made in India discs give less quality burns and have poorer scans.

Thanks for your help.

Here is a scan of the only Ridisc that i can re-rip without errors:

It is still a bad burn. but it's the only one that plays without errors.

Today i bought the Verbatim media.

Here's the scans:

At 2.4x

At 4x

Now some strange facts:

- I can rip without any error any of these burns, but my Plextor 708A drive can't recognize these discs. It's stange because it did recognized the Ridisc's which were a lot worse burn.

- I can play these Verbatim burns in any of my old standalones, such as Panasonic DVD S35, Pioneer DV 444 and Sony RDR-HX510, so i guess i will stick with the Verbatim media.

Plextor 708A can't recognize most of today's media. :(

I just revamped my 708A (cleaning and oiling it) and it was as good as new regarding reading - it could read everything, but couldn't write anything... It gave up on startup. Its Autostrategy couldn't help. So I said to myself to dedicate it to reading (although it still protests being slave to LG). :p

Then I came across some Taiyo Yudens and it wrote them just as good as in its best days. :D

So the moral of the story is: use same-generation burners and media.
