If you don't want to read the whole thing the question is at the bottom...

I have a 698 MB .avi file that I need to put on a DVD-R, so I followed the steps in the AVI to DVD guide (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/avi2dvdr.htm).

1.)I ripped the audio and converted it to .ac3 using VirtualDub and Besweet
2.)I used QuEnc to covnert the .avi file into a mpeg2 file, i used all of the setting found in the guide here (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/avi2dvdr.htm)

the resulting mpeg2 file was 4.88 GB, which wont fit on my DVD-R.

Normally, if the file would have fit the DVD-r, I would use DVDFlick to author the DVD: there is an option to have it copy the MPEG2 stream, and I set it to remove the audio that is in the MPEG2 file (QuEnc enclodes audio into the file, i think...) and replace it with the .ac3 audio.

Since the file is too big, I didn't set DVDFlick to copy the MPEG2 stream and just replaced the audio. So DVDFlick encodes the MPEG2 file to fit the dvd-r, which takes a long time.
______________

My question is:
Is it possible to reduce the size of the MPEG2 file that comes out of QuEnc by changing the bitrate or any other settings? I used a 9608 kbps bitrate.

Hi!

1) What is the audio format of the .AVI?

2) What is the audio format of the original source material (presumably a DVD)?

3) What is the sampling rate (640Kbps, 448Kbps, 224Kbps, 192Kbps) and number of channels of the .AC3 audiostream that you created?

1.) MPEG-1 Layer 3

2.) Forgot, i dont have the sources with me anymore

3.) I ran the file through GSPOT and this is what it says.
48000Hz 192 kb/s tot , stereo (2/0)

But what does the audio have to do with my question about the bitrates and lowering the size of the file through changing settings?

try avidemux, it can let you set the bitrate

cant I just set QuEnc to use a lower bitrate when I convert the file from avi to mpeg2?

Closed for presumed rule 6 violation. You don't own the sources anymore and you have a past history of violating rule 6.
