Hello all,
I'm a fairly new user to this kind of stuff. I wanted to start making avi backups of my movies and TV show collections. Needless to say, I went from auto gk to fairusewizard 2 to avi.net (which is what I'm currently using).

Avi.net does a pretty good job but as far as quality to the size of the file it's not near as what I would like to achieve. I searched and searched for guides, other gui's everything that might lead me to help get those quality type backups. But I've almost given up. So I stumbled upon this website.....

I look no further than here because all of you definitely know a lot about this stuff. I'm not looking to rip blu ray or hd or anything like that. Just simple dvd movies and tv show backups.

I haven't really tried MeGui which seems to be the powerhouse GUI encoder here. It seems way too complicated for me at this point. I'm a quick learner and know a pretty good amount about computers. So if anyone can help me in anway, then i would very much appreciate it. And I'm sure my laptop is plenty sufficient to handle the processing fairly quickly..

Avi.net doesn't produce the bit/frame i'm looking for. Which as I understand it the higher the number the better the quality the video will be ultimately. I can't seem to get it above .12 unless I break that 1,000mb barrier. Any help is much appreciated in any way shape or form....

Thanks much,

Douchie

Laptop specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo - T9400 2.6ghz
4gb DDR3 1066mhz
512mb ati radeon 3670
and a 7200rpm 500gb hard drive (hope this info helps)

also, all video will only be watched through my laptop.

I edited your first post to remove the reference to "best" per forum rule 12. Now you've deleted that and reposted with "best" again, and even noted that you know you shouldn't. Obey our forum rules or strikes will follow. I am editing your post again. Do not undo my edit.

If you want a basic introduction to using one of MeGUI's features, you can take a look at my intro video:
http://www.adubvideo.net/videos/megui-one-click-encoder-introduction

It details the use of the One Click Encoder, which is probably what you would be using anyways for your episodic rips.

Awesome actually, that worked very well. I did the same episode on meGUI at 175mb and then used avi.net at 250mb and the megui was a better quality. Although it is a better encoder... at least that's what i've read. Would anyone suggest maybe some profiles for and xvid or x264. Like which is best suited for what, the extra quality or the balanced on unrestricted x264. vs the xvid unrestricted profiles. Just maybe some suggestions on what profiles would be good for tv show episodes vs. movies......

This works great.

Also, everytime choose a profile then hit the one click encoder it says that "filetype restrictions too restrictive"

then is says "No container type could be found that matches the list of acceptable typesin your one click proflie Your restrictions are now being ignored"

Any more suggestions/tweaks to maybe up the quality some more if possible while keeping the speed of the encode up would be great. Thank you very much!

:thanks:
