Hi we are currently converting from dvd to vob to dv to mpeg4.
Is there a free or open source package that will skip all these steps and we can just put in the dvd and rip it to mpeg4?
What software can do this or atleast cut out a step or 2?
Thanks!

There is a GUI that converts straight from DVD to Mpeg4 (both avc and asp) for both mac and PC. It is called Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/). It has very good support and high quality output. It takes one step to rip the DVD and another to convert it, or you can use a separate program called DVD 43 (http://www.dvd43.com/) if your using Windows. Basically, it runs in the backround and decodes your DVD on the fly while you are converting. Good luck!
