View Full Version : VC-1 workaround with TMT picture blocky

I tried turbojet's workaround method for VC-1 with my XP machine and Arcsoft Total Media Theater ver. 2.1.6.120. I was able to get BD-Rebuilder to encode without errors a VC-1 BD. However, the resulting movie is very poor picture quality and blocky. I have been backing up DVDs for a while but I will admit to being a BD nubbie. I may have configured something wrong.
Attached is my GraphStudio which shows Haali VC-1 tweak and ArcSoft Video Decoder.
Any ideas what I may be doing wrong?

I had been having issues with a VC-1 title and nothing I read on here seemed to work, the encoding wouldn't even start. I finally used VC-1Tweak and set FFDshow to do the VC-1 encoding and it worked just fine, movie looks great. I am now curious as to why everyone says to disable it in FFDshow and use another encoder. But of course this is only one title I have done so it could be a fluke.

The vc-1 tweak only works if you disable the default in ffdshow - there are three options - disabled, libavcodec and wm9. By default it will use x264 if set to wm9. To use the vc-1 tweak with either powerdvd codec, or TMT2 codec you need to make ffdshow stop handling vc-1.
I'm not sure what you are doing.

Is the movie blocky or pixelated on your PC using TMT or on your HDTV?
TMT isn't the greatest and I can get the same resualts as you mention using it more so with MPEG2 streams but when I play on my TV everthing is fine. I used a RE disc when I first saw this with TMT as it freaked me out that all of a sudden I was creating poor copies, as I've stated I'm not real impressed with TMT but it works for this so I can't complain too much.
Supposively the best version to use for TMT is 119 not 120 but thats a mode point probably.

I have stumbled forward with some progress. I have noticed that this is relatively, at to DVDs, new backing up BD movies. You hve to do a lot of searching to find answers. Especially, if aren't familiar with the tools and sometimes some of the post seem to be talking a different language. That I'm not familiar with being a 5 yr vertran of backing up DVDs. Of course all your help is appreciated!
Firstly, I'm a newbie wrt ffdshow and I couldn't find that much information on it on how to use it. All the stuff I read on the VC-1 encoded movies kept talking about VC-1 settings in ffdshow. I never could find out what they were refering to. I thought I may not have the latest version, luckily I didn't. I reinstalled ffdshow and noticed that during installation it had the option of installing VC-1 and the default was not to install it. I installed it now I see VC-1...progress.
I then revisited turbojet's "BD-RB: Workarounds for 'reached retry limit. Aborting' error " thread. After doing some digging I was able to set VC-1 Tweaker (haali) merit to preferred with graphstudio. Beyond this I'm not sure I have the settings correct or optimal. My VC-1 is set to libavcodec. GraphStudio shows that it is using ffdshow video decoder. I have enclosed some pictures of my ffdshow configuration.
The good news is somehow the BD-Rebuilder produced a good BD. However, I'm still not sure I have it optimized or that this might be a one time success with VC-1. I only have one data sample.
I had to include two screen captures due so that I could scroll codecs.

drmih - I'm not sure how to do this, "To use the vc-1 tweak with either powerdvd codec, or TMT2 codec you need to make ffdshow stop handling vc-1." ?
