Going into tease mode, Wallace Santos, the CEO of custom PC builder Maingear, has blogged about a 'special' AMD CPU called the Phenom II TWKR Black Edition.

Hmmm, looks like someone let a few wafers thru with the "special sauce" knobs turned up to 11.

My Phenom X4 955 goes to 3.5 Ghz on standard voltage, I guess this is some factory pre-tested batch (which can surely go higher)
Omitting the vowels from the "Tweaker" is really l33t, well it was in 2004, maybe I'm just getting old and TWKR really is the new spellingz, cuz it's more compact or whatever :)
woah!

only good if you are using extreme cooling like ln2 etc.. these parts have high leakage which is good under extreme cold but not so much on air/water...

955 hit 7Ghz in extreme overclocking. the TWeaKeR parts should get beyond that barrier. lets's see what liquid helium can do...

Nice looks like AMD is making a comeback.
Just out of curiosity, how are the 955's and this one doing as far as everyday use 24/7 type OC on air for example?
Temps and such.
Theses high speeds on dry ice and such are nice, but not realistic for most.
I'm curious about everyday use overclocking on air with them.
Any links appreciated :)

These are hand picked CPUs because they probably have higher leakage current. Which means that the transistors run hotter, but if the heat can be controlled (under LN2 o LHe), they will overclock further.
These CPUs won't increase air overclocks, on the contrary might decrease them due to increased heat. But under LN2 they should be able to make new records.

The 955 BE is quite good for overclocking on air but keep in mind the motherboard will make a big difference.
The better the mobo the more stable will be the overclock. Overclockers usually prefer the Asus M4AT79...
Common results are around 3,8/3.9 Ghz with non-stock coolers.
obviously some crazy heads using LHe reached a stable overclock at this speed:

AMD Phenom II TWKR 42 overclocked to 6+ Ghz (stable) without LHe or LN2...

Pretty amazing stuff. 6 GHz on a VapoChill! I wonder how long the CPU would survive 24/7 x264 encoding? :D

I am finally getting a x4 920/940 on my old asus m2n vm hdmi, hope x264 will be stable at 3.6-4 ghz.

you will have a hard time on that board.
from the looks of it, the CPU power circuitry (MOSFETs) doesn't even have any heatsink plus chokes used are of the inferior kind (the golden round things).
I'm not sure if it even supports a max TDP of 125W.

phenom x4 955 is also a good overclocker. it's AM3 though, so you need an AM3 board and DDR3 memories too.

AM3 platform has a slightly higher cost due to quality boards need for that CPU and the cost of the CPU itself. Although the DDR3 is cheap these days, DDR2 is still cheaper.
Plus next to nothing benefit in gaming by DDR3, not sure about x264.

Any speed increase for x264/vegas if i go with 2gb ddr3 1600 over 4 gb ddr2 800 ?
