Last night I attempted to replace a CD-ROM with a DVD-ROM in a friends Dell PC. Simple, I've done it hundreds of times. The problem that I'm having is the drive only works with CD's. I put in a DVD and it just spins and doesn't recognize the disc. I know the drive works as I tested it in my computer before installing it in his. Any ideas? Thanks.

Just that one DVD or all DVDs?

Hopefully it's not a blank DVDR ;)

All DVD's. I'm beginning to suspect a driver conflict. All I did was swap out the CD-ROM with DVD-ROM. I just emailed him to have him go into device manager, uninstall the driver, and restart the computer then let windows reinstall it again. I also wonder if it might have something to do with not having a dvd decoder installed.

Hopefully it's not a blank DVDR ;)

The DVD's we tested were all retail DVD's.

I also wonder if it might have something to do with not having a dvd decoder installed. No, that's irrelevant.

Could be a bad drive. I've seen plenty of DVD burners etc that don't read DVDs at all.

Also, are your motherboard chipset drivers installed and up-to-date?

Hi!

Are you sure you have the correct jumper setting(s)?

The CD-ROM was set to CS so I set the DVD-ROM to CS. Is this not correct? I haven't heard back from him whether or not uninstalling the driver helped.
