What about using a recent version of VirtualDub instead of a discontinued fork that hasn't been updated for half a decade?

Avidemux works under Windows 7 just fine. If you want to use VirtualDub, install the latest Xvid VFW (http://www.koepi.info/xvid.html) Codec - should work under Windows 7.
