Hello
Since last week, french HD broadcast contains only eac3 tracks.
(AC3 tracks have been removed)
And I don't manage to convert it (eac3to seems not to work with my records or maybe it needs a special command line)
Can some tell me what's wrong with this track and how I can convert it?
I'm not alone in this case.
Thank you
here is a sample (h264, 2 eac3 tracks) :

These streams contain E-AC-3 audio that uses the spectral extension feature, which is not implemented in libavcodec. If you're using any lavc-based player or converter, they will not work. There is a pending patch which adds the support, but it has not been committed to the SVN repository yet. It won't be long though.

If it plays in WinAmp, you can use the dump plugin and then encode to AC3.

It works with eac3to if you have nero7 installed ; it's just the libav decoder has issues

I think Winamp don't play eac3, also don't play ac3 without the Alexander Vigovsky plugin.

The Nero HD DVD / Blu-Ray plugin is also needed.

but the HD plugin seems to be no longer available :(

Nero 9 won't be useful?
Thank for replies

I can't wait for the libavcodec patch to play eac3 easely.
However i wonder if this patch will also make it easier to convert eac3 to ac3/aac...? Or is it my question that is stupid...? :D
Anyway, i'm glad to see other people trying to understand how to play/convert eac3!

The patch does 1 thing. It adds support to libavcodec for properly decoding E-AC-3 streams which use spectral extension.

The other problems in the sample:
[a03] [libav] Enhanced coupling is not implemented... <WARNING>
...
[a03] [libav] 3+cplendf = 3 < cplbegf = 12 <WARNING>
...
are solved also?

The audio of your sample is playing fine in MPC-HC with the built-in decoder. At least the 5.1 track, the stereo one is not detected thus can't be selected.
The video track wasn't detected either with the built-in splitter, I had to force the use of the Arcsoft splitter to be able to see it. But still, no audio track #2 available.
Latest RC3 of VLC detects both audio tracks, and can play the 5.1 one when used with a patched DLL. I've found this on the VLC forums:
1/ Download VLC 1.0.0-RC3 from there:
http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/testing/vlc-1.0.0-rc3/win32/
2/ Download this patched DLL:
http://www.jbkempf.com/~jb/libavcodec_plugin.dll
3/ In the Plugins folder replace the original libavcodec_plugin.dll from the RC3 with the patched one.
Although it's for Windows only and it seems to be very experimental for now and it crashes when trying to play the stereo audio track. But at least it can play your sample.

Thanks for the all the informations and the tips to decode eac3 files!
Since it is possible to play the file with vlc, it's then possible to convert it at least into mp3 but not aac.

You have to choose the output file output.mp3 and enter 48Hz in the mp3 seetings or else vlc won't be able to convert the file.

mp3 is not the best but it's a good solution until official patches come out to convert eac3 into ac3/aac.
see ya colargol7 & all the people who helped us :)

I can provide you a fresh FFmpeg patched build to transcode the stream to ac3...
As a side note, I tried to build shared libraries (to update the ones from the EAC3to package) but it crashes during loading...dunno why.

Well, I finally decided to keep EAC3 track. They play fine with lastest ffdshow :)
But if you have something usefull, you can post it of course ;)
