Four CC problem!!

I am completely new to this forum and to multimedia in general. I have searched the forum but have not found anything that could help me. Here is my problem:

I recently recorded a video using my webcam and the program that came with it called "AMCap". It recorded the video as a file type "Micorsoft AVI" which I have never seen before. I could view the video in Windows media player but I could not permanently associate a program with it. After doing a little reading on this file type i (for reasons unknown to me) decided to change the fourcc code to try to get it to play in other programs. BIG MISTAKE I know!

Anyway my problem is that I can no longer get the video to play in anything and I have tried everything I can think of to fix it including taking another video to see what the default fourcc was and trying to change it back. I used GSPOT and it said the codec for the new file was "DIB (_RGB)"

Can anyone help me??

Still haven't resolved your problem since posting at the Tech Support Forum more than a month ago?

Why don't you just use your webcam to capture another video and then see what the FOURCC is for that new video?

This is the standard video format for Windows. It has the file extension .AVI
This tells the application to combine the video and audio in a single file with the extension AVI.

The file type (AVI) has nothing to do with FOURCC. When the application saves the video and audio in the AVI file, it can optionally compress each with a compressor. The compressor is then identified by a four letter code, called FOURCC. For Xvid the FOURCC is XVID, for Divx is DIVX or DX50 and so on.

The fourcc code _RGB means that the video inside the AVI file is not compressed at all, it's just like having a series of BMP pictures inside the AVI file. Some video players have problems playing such files.
You have to go in the Options panel of the software and choose a compressor that will compress the video part inside the movie:

you need to choose one codec for video and one for audio. you may not have the same lists as mine.

For video the best in the list would be xvid, but you may need to install it first if you didn't install it ever.

For audio, the best would be mp3, then pcm (no compression big file size), then ADPCM...

Also, it's possible not all from the list you have will work.

Once you pick a codec for video and audio you can fine tune the compression for both by clicking on the buttons saying Properties.

is there anyway to change the file back to it's original cedec, back to DIB (_RGB) ? or another way i can get it to play? i have tried to change the fourcc to a codec which i have installed on my computer but all i get is a pixelated video.

Please re-read my earlier post (#2) - and after you've done as I've suggested, load the new file into GSpot and see what the FOURCC is for that file's video codec.

Then use "FOURCC Changer", or similar, to change the FOURCC of your original file to that of your new, test file...

when i captured the new video it said the the codec was DIB(_RGB). I tried to change the fourcc back to that but it didn't work. do you know of a way where that can be done?

The following is from a thread at the "VideoHelp Forum", from a poster with the identical problem - Codec noted as DIB(_RGB):

Than i installed the graph studio on two different computers analyzing the same video, and studying the route of the codec filters from the .avi file to the output video renderer.
And then i observed some strange differences, such as : some SUB-VOB filter between the .avi, and the avi splitter.
On the other computer(playing perfectly the video)i use the k -litle codec pack. On this one: ace megacodecpack.
I installed the k-little codeck pack.---it containes a miscellaneous part of some broken filters and codecs detection.
This was my final salvation, because a lot of broken codecs/filters was detected and deleted from the registry.

You also don't need to install the codec pack (and probably shouldn't install any codec pack) to get the broken filter finder tool: it comes as a standalone called the K-Lite Codec Tweak Tool.
