What is "REC" and why can't you make it directly instead of making the MKV in the first place?

There's a PVR built in Australia called Topfield. Files need to be converted to its format which are called REC . . . ?? I've been given an MKV file on a disk. I need to convert this file . . . ??
VideoReDo is a program that Doom9 members will be familiar with. Editing and saving TS files can be done to various formats including MPG, VOB & REC . . . .?

Why do you need to make it compatible with the PVR? Can't you just play it directly? Is it a movie or what?

Want to be able to watch it with family on big screen in nice warm lounge room as opposed to tiny computer screen in cold office!!

Assuming this thread is still "kosha", is it OK to ask about freeware that might do the above job??

What is the content of the MKV file and what audio and video formats does it contain?

It's home footage of a knock-about band.
Would something like G-Spot help me with finding out audio & video formats? I think I've heard people describe MKV as a "container". A term I'm still trying to understand . . . ??

Would something like G-Spot help me with finding out audio & video formats? Yes, it certainly would.
