Trellis with constant quality mode?

Should I be using trellis with constant quality mode? I have read it should only be used for 2pass encoding. Is this true?

Ok thanks. So I can expect higher quality when using trellis-2 whether constant quality or 2pass?Higher compression, meaning better quality at the same bitrate.

All options that improve compression are not necessarily bitrate-agnostic: some options may increase both quality and bitrate (but increase quality more than they increase bitrate). Other options may decrease both quality and bitrate (but decrease bitrate more than they decrease quality). And so forth.
