As in the other thread, there were many "complaints" stating a lot of Blu-rays low pass the video and have no high frequency.

First of all, what is high frequency? Is there a comparison pic of high frequency and truncated high frequency?

How much bitrate is saved from low passing videos? (Looking for an adjective, although numbers would be nice too)

What kind of AVC encoders are Blu-rays encoded with?

What are some of the best Blu-rays you've seen?

What are other things done to Blu-rays beside low passing?

Are there any well encoded 20-30mbps x264 1080p encodings out there?

Is transparency possible with 30-35mbps for 1080p videos with x264?

High frequencies in images are just your fine detail. Think of the how tiny an individual hair looks on a 1080p frame. That's very fine (and high frequency) detail.

Lower frequency detail is easier to encode, whereas high frequency detail is harder. In quantization, most of the time those high frequency coefficients get rounded to 0 because it's a good way to save bits without a severe impact on quality.

With regards to low passing, if you were to apply a light blur to a crisp HD frame, it would still look pretty good but your fine details would be a bit blurry. That's one form of low passing. Most of the time a low pass has a cutoff frequency (anything over this gets filtered) with a roll off since a sharp cut off usually ends up with some artifacting IIRC (I don't remember 100% -- M4G can clarify here).


Also, it doesn't take much bitrate for x264 to produce nice looking 1080p content. I personally don't use any more than 10 mbps and I get -extremely- good quality.

Frequency and resolution are different measurments of the same thing. If you have a lowpassed image, it means you could store the image without quality loss at a lower resolution. So "lowpassed HD" is an oxymoron. A dvd upscale could be called "lowpassed 1080P".

I know 10mbps can get you very good quality 1080p, but I'm talking about transparency.
