All,
A while back I wrote a basic guide on ripping HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movies to disc (see my sig for more information, I won't go into it here). Long story short, I've had great sucess with that process and am very familiar with it. My issue is that I recently purchased a Blu-Ray burner and want to get into burning some of my ripped movies in order to play them in a set-top blu-ray player in another room. As we all know, may BD movies are still larger than a single layer BD disc, even when only the movie track and 1 audio track are muxed. My question is:
Can someone please point me to a guide on this forum which describes a basic method of downconverting the 1080p blu-ray track on my discs to 720p (or a lower any custom res)? Or a method that would allow me to re-enconde to h.264 using the settings of my choice to get the total muxed track less than 25gig, thus, able to fit onto a blank single layer bd rom?
Any help would be much appreciated.
PS: I am VERY poor at using non gui programs, but would be willing to try

Hi!
In addition to the suggestion by "neuron2", you might want to look into the recently arrived "AVCHDCoder"...

Thanks to both of you.
@Neuron2 - this program looks amazing. I'm assuming this program encodes the video portion of the BD disc using h.264, and changes the bitrate based on the size you want your file to be?
I'm currently running the first pass and it seems to be running smoothly so far!

@QuadcoreHD
Just remember that BD-RB is beta and may (or may not..) give you some problems..

Another question (by the way BD Rebuilder is great). Is there a method for creating DVD structure and burning to DVD-5 media? I've tried a few programs but they all seem to force encode the media to DVD resolutions.
Any ideas?

Well if you want dvd structure you have to abide by dvd specs.
bd-rebuilder can create a avchd disk. ie: blu-ray res on a dvd disk. But it will only play on avchd compatible players.

Understood. However, (and please, correct me if I'm wrong) couldn't I mux to .TS using TSMuxer, then simply create DVD structure with a program that converts .TS to DVD structure? Or, does the video have to be re-encoded by the program, thus no longer will be the same AVC-HD format as BD-Rebuilder creates? For example, i did transform a .TS into dvd structure with Nero 9, but the resolution was 720 x 480 and i didnt see a way to change this.
Thanks,

For your situation it would be best to remux to .ts and import to nero instead of spending a lot of time encoding with BD-Rebuilder. DVD resolution must be 720x480, 720x576 or 352x240 and framerate must be 29.97 or 25. I don't know how much nero supports like subs, chapters, menus but there is ways to keep subs and chapters but it all has to be done manually and quite a bit of work as far as I know. AVStoDVD I think is working on BD to DVD movie only support with subs and chapters and maybe later on a menu. It would be nice to find a fairly simple tool to do this and it would even be better if full backups could be done with retail menu and extras.

I'm not sure I understand the question.
Of course you have to enforce DVD specs if you want to create a DVD structure. That includes the mandatory DVD resolutions, someone was gentle enough to mention them above. There are also 352x576i and x480i (useful for PAL/NTSC VHS copies) and 352x288 (a sort of VCD PAL with a shorter GOP, ie 15 instead of 18). All these resolutions may be MPEG2-encoded, including the lower ones (352x288) - that's why the Chinese are able to fit 4/8 movies on a single DVD ;)
You can however encode the HD video to an AVCHD or BD5/9 disc, ie a DVDR (DVD5 or DVD9) that can hold HD video and is playable only on BD players (and PS3 or PCs). But that's not a DVD structure, it's an AVCHD/BD structure, just the media is different.

Or, does the video have to be re-encoded by the program, thus no longer will be the same AVC-HD format as BD-Rebuilder creates? Not only are HD resolutions not possible with a DVD structure, but also AVC video is not possible.

Hello,
Can someone please tell me if there is burning software for BR that works like DVD Shrink?
Is this even possible with BR?
This is in regards to compression.
Most appreciated,
Mr. Panda

Hello d3m,
\Thank you for your most appreciated reply.
You are absolutely correct.
Obvisould I missed something here.
While I am waithing for my BR drive to arrive I will re read this thread and specifically look into AVCHD Coder.
Most sincerely,
Mr. Panda
In terms of ease of use, I recommend BD-Rebuilder. In terms of tweaking AVCHD Coder is a lot of fun. BD-Rebuilder has been in development a little longer, if that means anything to you.

Thank you for your most appreciated reply!
I have ordered a BR drive for my Son.
His computer is much better than mine and was set up for gaming and BR support.
Yes,
the easier software woud be best!
He just downloaded some sofware for doing this but have not seen what it is yet.
Told him,
it is always best to follow recommendations on this form.
Most appreciated,
Mr. Panda
