what's your average bitrate for your "real world" encodes of 720p(24/25) material? how about for the web?

i've pretty much been doing only 720p60 and i USUALLY have to use ~5600kbps+, so seeing this vid was kinda shocking (in more ways than one)

On2 (VP6?) 1.58mbps

at first i was blown away by the quality (for a non h.264 encode). then i noticed a few things (is it just me, or is the clarity half way in between 480p scaled and "true" 720p?)

also, would you consider this "not a real world encode" since about 66% of the scene moves in video-compressor-friendly amounts?

are there any clips out there that have closer to real world motion/complexity if this isn't?

VP6 can get away with low bitrates like that because Flash players usually have built-in postprocessing for VP6 videos in the form of dither+addgrain+deblocking.

If you allow this kind of cheating, you can do even better with x264.

sadly, i have access to very few music videos, let alone least-compressed HD source ones. are there any musicvideo collections out there on blu-ray? (i'm aware of the Tiesto disc, but i'm looking for filmed music vids).

Music videos are quite a bit like movie trailers from a content perspective. Both have faster editing than normal movie content, are generally shot on film or film-style digital, etcetera.

1.58 Mbps is on the low side, but not that low, for 720p24 VBR.

I'm in the midst of writing the H.264 chapter of my book ("H.26L" got all of 2 paragraphs 7 years ago in the 1st edition :)). Sounds like as good an excuse for a MeGui tutorial as any.

I find that [3000-5000] kbps range for 720p is very good with "HQ" and "balanced" presets (depends on the complexity of source) in meGUI.
