Hello all!

I'm looking for a way to convert VHS to DVD in Linux. I've seen a bunch of sites with instructions, which required buying some rather expensive equipment (one site had something that cost hundreds of dollars).

A family member of mine has a Pinnacle TV Capture device for a Mac, which takes a coaxial cable and converts to USB. She has only used it once or twice to watch TV on her Mac, but has no documentation on how it works (I've yelled at her for not keeping the instructions and such - something I ALWAYS do...), but using Ubuntu, they would probably be worthless anyway.

What I'm wondering is instead of buying anything extra, can I use this Coax-to-USB to simply act as a medium between my computer and a VCR to get video through a USB connection? Assuming I can get drivers, etc... I basically just want to know if I'm wasting my time pursuing this.

I saw this as well: http://sewelldirect.com/USB-20-Video-Capture-Device-S-Video-and-RCA_specs.asp?source=froogle&utm_source=Froogle&utm_medium=cse

...which leads me to believe I can do what I want with what I've got. I realize the coaxial connection would probably give really poor quality, but they're just some old home videos we want to resurrect.

Thanks for any assistance!

Yes, assuming there are drivers for the device. Stick it in your Ubuntu machine and check the USB ID with lsusb. That's the most reliable way to find out which device it is and if there is a driver for it. If you're lucky, it might also work straight away without installing extra drivers.
