My wife has to put together a powerpoint presentation for work and she needs to include some video clips from the web in it.

So I downloaded the .flv from the internet, but I'm not sure what a basic windows XP at her work will play natively without her needing to install any codecs.

I would probably use avidemux to re-encode for her.

Will XP play xvid in avi container? I don't want her presentation to choke because I picked the wrong formats.

Thanks in advance!

Your best bet is going to be WMV....

Xvid, Divx, h264 aren't going play without the appropriate filters installed, and unless they've had the need to play such videos before they are unlikely to be installed already, plus depending on the rules/guidelines in place at her organisation they may not be able to be installed.

I've never used AVIDemux to create WMV's before so not sure how that will go for you but Windows Movie Maker is a standard package that is usually preinstalled with most Windows XP installs and it will make perfectly compatible WMV's.

Another option could be MPEG1/2 format, but it is not as efficient as WMV so you may end up with significantly larger files and if you intend to email it to work it could pose a problem!

MPEG-1 and WMV are it. Go with WMV9 if you can.

In the future, you could give programs such as HDConvertToX to quickly convert your files to WMV. No need to drag it around in Vegas and risk having it messed up on accident.

I'll remember that, Vegas seems to be slow to encode anyway, but I guess I dunno how fast it should be...
