You can't "get" details when encoding videos. They are either there or not; you can alter them, eliminate them, add noise to mimic them, but not create them.

@ Desikiller:

Hello! Welcome to doom9!

I'd be glad to help you improve the quality of whatever you're trying to re-encode. Please post a short unprocessed sample of your video.

What format is your source, and what are you trying to encode to?

Erm... yuck..

The only thing I like about the second vs the first is the proper luma levels. I'd go with a lot less saturation, and for sure less sharpening.

Yea, you're right. What ''we'' want to learn is how to make the first screen looks like the second?

Since there are no other samples, I'll use this as a reference.

Downloading now, and I'll post some results later.

Second shoot looks like a colorwater painting to me like ati does.
That is never natural; it reminds me the difference between the shots taken by nvidia and ati anyhow:D

Okay, your images are invalid :) the first one has incorrect luma levels - but that's your fault, not the source's. The source has valid 16-235 levels. The reason yours looked washed out is because of something in your playback chain.

That's a really poor source though. Easy to IVTC, but the compression is terrible. Huge amounts of macroblocking etc... :(

I did what I could, upscaling to 1080p...

#First, let's deblock
SeparateFields
DFTTest(sigma=.7)
Weave

#Now, let's IVTC
TFM.Vinverse.TDecimate

#Then crop out the gunk on the edges of the borders
Crop(4, 44, -4, -48)

#And finally upscale to 1080p with NNEDI + Spline36
NNEDI(0, dh=true).TurnRight.NNEDI(0,dh=true).TurnLeft
Spline36Resize(1920,864)

#Now let's do some sharpening
LSFMod(SMode=5).LSFMod(SMode=5)

#And add a nice sprinkling of HD grain
GrainFactory3(g1str=5, g2str=7, g3str=9)

Here's a gallery..

What do u mean by my playback chain? I dont get it.

And the reason it has huge amounts of macroblocking is that it was a shrinked DVD...sorry about that. But i just wanted to know how to deal with the colors...

Thanks, trying it right away

why would you use hdragc on a real movie??

It's designed for recovering really messed up stuff, or home video.

If you're backing up a movie (IMO) your aim should not be to "make it look better", but to preserve the look of the source. There are no real flaws with the sample you posted (aside from the horrible macroblocking). It's a little soft, and looks better when denoised and fresh grain is added to it. That's about as far as I'd go.

Regarding playback chain - I mean whatever software you used to create the washed out "before" screenshot you posted. It's not displaying the content correctly - end of story.

Hi,

Exactly, ffdshow can be the better or the worst of a playback chain; it is easy to forget what settings was/were used for a particular task but not meaned to be permanent; example I always check that the post-processing (for xvid) is disabled; if not my encoding chain filters and use of cpu=2 or deblock() may not give good results when viewed outside MPC+ffdshow (tv set).

If you display the video with wrong luminance levels, you will get washed out colors. What should be black will look more like gray, for example.
The upper picture in your screenshot shows exactly that problem! But this is not a problem in the video itself. It's a playback problem on your side.
Hence this kind of problem should NOT be corrected by modifying/filtering the video, but by getting your playback chain fixed!
