Im just wondering, How many burns is a burner good for?? I had a liteon burner (model#lh20a) that burned a LOT of discs then quit on me. I replaced it with a tsst (mod#? it was returned).the tsst didnt make near as many burns before dying, still on warranty, it was replaced with a liteon ihas322. The 1st liteon would still read but would NOT burn, so no discs were ruined, but the tsst unit ruined quite a number of dvdz before I realized it was junk (I dont watch all dvds after burning, usually I scan chapter by chapter on -rw's before burning to +r's, not realizing that at about every 2 to 10 minutes or so a 2 or 3 second glitch was on the disk. Ive since re-burned a few of said discs with the new burner, and they are primo. Anyways, I am just curious on whats the life expectantcy of these burners?? -bell-

The brand of DVD-R/W's is even important, for instance, I use
Philips DVD-RW's (25 pack spindle), and they all give errors after only 1 burn, sometimes fully reformating works, but it rather seldom, they are pure crap imho.

I look forward in finding quality DVD-RW's, but there are so many brands....

Good Media = Verbatim!

On to the original question...
Life Expectancy of Optical Drives is hard to predict as they have many moving parts, are susceptible to all sorts of mistreatment and on top of that they are a mass produced product, most likely assembled by a machine.....

I've had a Plextor burner for 4 years, have burnt over 800 DVD's and have only made 2 coasters. I use only Taiyo Yuden disks.
