View Full Version : ATI video card owners---drivers.
Hi,
Nearly 2yr ago I bought a Sapphire 2600XT to run hi-defs. I don't play games...
I don't have too many blu titles...yet. Lots a HDDVDs tho.
Do I need to "update" to get better GPU decoding? If so which versionis the most "stable"?
Quite a few unsatisfied owners with the latest v9.4 at the ati forum...
TIA.
You may not only need to update your drivers, but also your video card. But that is a may. Upon further research, you just may be able to get by. You mention an update to you drivers, yet you do not say which version you are currently running. You may not even need an update.
Usually, the rule of thumb when it comes to driver updates is this: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
So, if you can already decode a DXVA compatible stream with, say, Media Player Classic Home Cinema for example, then you are totally fine!

The saying 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' is always taken out of context. With a car, you don't wait till it stops working then get it servced, you get it serviced when its supposed to (some people don't, and end up in trouble later).
The same thing goes with driver updates. They're pretty well tested these days, you shouldn't have too many problems. Absolute worst case scenario is you can use the roll back driver function in device manager.
Some people don't update Windows then wonder why they're a security risk.
Some people don't use an antivirus through stubborness then wonder why their computer behaves strangely and stuff happens
Ancient revisions of codecs work, why not use a build of x264 thats a couple of years old. Hey, it ain't broke, why 'fix' (update) it?
Same goes in life too, people hate change (if they're not the one's instigating it). There are many examples of this.
In terms of computers, the saying only partly applies to bios/firmware updates, only because they are a higher risk update.
The saying is meant to only refer to not pulling apart things if you do not have a reason, just for the sake of it. In that sense, if you buy a mobile phone for example, or a new tv, don't pull it apart!

9.5 will solve almost all of the current issues
I have tested the beta of 9.5 quite a lot and the results are awesome.
According to a german website ATI has commited +/-1 million changes/fixes to 9.5 ( including changes for the linux driver)

true, but unless my memory is faulty, catalyst 9.5 wont be good for radeon 2000 series, only for 3000 and 4000...

true, but unless my memory is faulty, catalyst 9.5 wont be good for radeon 2000 series, only for 3000 and 4000...It will, i tested on the 2400pro (and the 4770 but that doesn't count)
Anything older than the 2000 series only gets driver updates ever 3 months (but that doesn't mean that shared dll's aren't updated)

Hi,
Is the 4770 confirming it's expectations?
Being between the 4830 and 4850 for a better price?
Anybody using it for fft3dgpu or equivalent?

warning for gamers: cats 9.5 with 4850 cards have some performance problems in seveal videogames. so if you're also a gamer and own a 4850 card (or more), upgrading to cats 9.5 is not recommended. wait for the next catalyst release.

Do you talk about the leaked ones?

The 9.5 leaked ones are the same as the official ones afaik. Ever since cat 8.12, the deinterlace settings are broken for me (the slider is stuck on weave).

Did you disable the AutoSelect checkbox in deinterlacing?

Yes I did. I should have mentioned that the ATI card in question is a laptop (Radeon Xpress 1150). Since its a legacy product, driver support has been discontinued (for the most part) since 9.3 :( .
