View Full Version : PsyRD & PsyTrellis Question?
Can someone explain on some example when which settings are used.
I have problems with encoding dark underwater frames (especially on darkblue) and I thought that Psy settings could deliver me better results.
Example is DeepBlue (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365109/combined) DVD. Almost everywhere, where the camera is filming dark underwater (not night) there is kind of ringing on my LCD (maybe is my LCD just bad :) ). Even if I encode on bitrates over 4000, the problem is still there.

Sounds like you're confusing banding with ringing.
Thanks for replies
Sounds like you're confusing banding with ringing.
Maybe, sorry maybe I misunderstood the definition of ringing :). Here are some examples.
These were coded with following settings with x264 core 67 r1145M d2e1e1c (updated through megui updater), the source is PAL DVD with avg bitrate ~8000. I used your HR Matrix, I didn't know if it makes any sense to use matrix on latest x264 builds. The result looked in my eyes same as other settings with crf16 or crf18, that's why I deleted them, but I could encode some frames with same settings and post it.
Afterwards I realised that it was pretty stupid to use 2pass encoding and matrix :(.
program --pass 2 --bitrate 3000 --stats ".stats" --ref 5 --mixed-refs --bframes 3 --b-adapt 2 --b-pyramid --weightb --direct auto --deblock -1:-1 --subme 7 --trellis 2 --partitions all --8x8dct --me umh --threads auto --thread-input --cqmfile "N:\Matrixes\MPEG-4 AVC Custom Matrices\eqm_avc_hr.cfg" --progress --no-psnr --no-ssim --output "output" "input"

Is there any sense of using original matrix or matrix based on original? If so, what's the way to find out the right one and could I use one created by dgindex?

That's why I asked what can I do with these settings. I googled about it, but at the end I really don't know how, when ... . I would like to understand these settings :). Is there any good manual or thread explaining these settings?
I tried different settings, psytrellis was always "0,0", I understand it as disabled (btw, it's default in megui profiles). Above is one of them, here are some other:
program --crf 18 --ref 5 --mixed-refs --bframes 3 --b-adapt 2 --b-pyramid --weightb --deblock -1:-1 --trellis 2 --partitions all --8x8dct --me umh --threads auto --thread-input --progress --no-psnr --no-ssim --output "output" "input"
program --crf 16 --ref 5 --mixed-refs --bframes 3 --b-adapt 2 --b-pyramid --weightb --deblock -1:-1 --trellis 2 --partitions all --8x8dct --me umh --threads auto --thread-input --progress --no-psnr --no-ssim --output "output" "input"
program --crf 18 --ref 5 --mixed-refs --bframes 3 --b-adapt 2 --b-pyramid --weightb --deblock -1:-1 --trellis 2 --partitions all --8x8dct --me umh --threads auto --thread-input --cqmfile "N:\Matrixes\MPEG-4 AVC Custom Matrices\eqm_v3ehr.xcm" --progress --no-psnr --no-ssim --output "output" "input"
I use CoreAVC, what do you mean with "play with AQ", decoder setting? If so, where can change it?

That's banding, not ringing.
Thanks, now I learned something :). I have to learn better Terminology to understand/filter threads to help me myself with this banding problem :(

Remove that custom matrix and try "--psy-rd 1:0.4" instead. Also "--subme 9" may be worth adding, while "--partitions all" is superfluous (simply remove "--partitions").
Also some dithering before encoding may help to prevent banding...

Use AVS-filter gradfun2db(1.8) and ApplyRange() for those frames with banding, if they're difficult to get rid of.

there was also some thread here about a new method by manipulating the Streams Video Information to fulrange range and a custom matrix some Decoder seem to render this different and banding seems reduced didn't tried it myself but it sounds nice if it really works ;)
