View Full Version : Processing / Cutting Speed

When I cut videos (HD TS files) in software, which then joins them up without re-encoding, or when reading/processing files for editing in Nero, it is very slow, yet I have a very fast machine CPU wise. Am I guessing this is due to the hard drive speed rather than the CPU or memory ?

What could I buy to make a 30 minute re-join process job take less then 10 minutes ?

Hi Jon,

If you have an editor that edits without re-encoding, the time it takes to generate the output will be about the same time as a file copy. If it takes significantly longer, then your editor is re-encoding everything.

To check if it's re-encoding, check your CPU usage in Task Manager. If it's peaking at 100% cpu use, your editor is re-encoding.

If you still think it's your hard drive, try doing the edit in TSPE (http://www.bitstreamtools.com) which will not re-encode any part of your video (as I haven't written that yet!)

Hope that helps,

Regards,

Vent

Thanks Vent. Great software you have written there. So the slowness is due to file copy which means hard drive speed, yes ? It is probably not slow, maybe normal, it just seems slow when sitting waiting for something. So if using your software, for example, I wanted to speed up the joining at the end, what do you suggest would do that ?

Hi Jon,

Thanks for your kind words!

The first thing to try is to defragment your hard drive. If you are using the inbuilt defrag utility, re-run the defragmentation multiple times until it doesnt defrag anymore.

Then, the best and easiest way to speed up your editing is to have 2 or more hard drives. Point your output file to a different hard drive from the source. This will give a very significant performance increase.

You can further increase this performance if you use raid striping in one form or another. This uses more than 1 hard drive to split data across the drives so you can read and write data from multiple drives simultaneously. You could make your raid array with 10K rpm WD Raptors for ultimate hard drive speed.

Then there are SSD drives and ram drives. Ram drive is the fastest but requires alot of memory eg. 16GB or 24GB would be required for a HDTV movie.

Hope that helps,
