What is a good free tool that can batch process mp3s and encoding them to have a higher volume? It is painful (literately) to have to adjust volume when you get to a classical track, and then when the track ends and switch to a pop song, it kills my ears.

Using ReplayGain instead of reencoding is not good option for you? I don't know how many players supports it, but Foobar does.

Audacity is too complicated, and you can't batch process.

I think Winamp supports replaygain too.
But you can also use mp3gain (http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/) to apply replaygain volume adjustments to your mp3s permanently so you can use them with any player.
I say permanently but mp3gain can also reverse the process, and it's all lossless.

Thanks a lot. MP3Gain is fantastic, exactly what I'm looking for.
