i don't much avidemux well yet, but all i want to do is to cut parts of my avi files and get an avi file output. what do i have to do to get this program to output and avi file? i just want to take an avi file, cut part of it and have an avi output. i just can't get it to out put avi format. it keeps on outputting some sort of file that i don't know that to to with.

Leave audio and video set to "Copy", leave container set to "AVI", seek to keyframes using the buttons on the bottom toolbar (mouse over for labels). When you're at the closest keyframe to the start of a segment you want, make that "A" by clicking the left bracket button; do the same near the end, but click the right bracket and make that "B". Go to File -> Save video..., pick your output file, and you're done.

thanks a lot for your help, i did and have been doing exactly what you said and all i get is some sort of file that looks like a very small sheet, it is not a avi file which is what i want.

Avidemux requires you to explicitly type in the ".avi" extension when you save your file.

No it doesn't! Windows Explorer does require you to name your file "foobar.avi", if you want a fancy icon for that file :p
An AVI file is an AVI, no matter what extension you append to its name. A proper player will recognize the file's type without relying on certain file naming convention.
