I'm in the experimenting stage of capturing at a high resolution and compressing the moment and I seem to have hit a snag so I wonder if anyone else has this problem.
I'm using a pinnacle PCTV card with Virtualdub1.4.8 capturing using Pic video MJpeg and converting to Divx3.11 or Divx4.12. My PC is an AMD 900 256Mb ram old DMA33 Hard Drive.
When I capture in 640*480 and 768*576 mode using Picvideo Mjpeg compression the capture is fine.
When I recompress this with Divx 3.11 this is also fine, altering the bitrate settings alters the overall bitrate of the final Divx clip as expected. No Problems here.
When I use divx 4.12 I have problems. In a 640*480 mode compress the system works but the bitrate control (on single pass setting) does not seem to work properly. The final Divx clip will not drop to the low bitrate as in divx3.11. With the test MJPEG clip I used I could not get the final bitrate to below 120KB/sec whatever bitrate I configured in Divx 4.12. Is This normal?
When I encode with divx4.2 in 768*576 mode I get even more problems.
When I got to encode Virtualdub crashed bringing up a dubug window. By trail and error I have found that it is possible to encode by following a set of actions. If you first load up your 768*576 clip, go to video compression, sellect the divx 4.2 encoder ONLY Virtualdub works fine. However if you go into the configurations menu of divx 4.12 to say alter the bit rate etc., when you go to compress then virtualdub crashes. So order to encode in 768*480 you first have to load a 640*480 clip, set the divx4.12 configs, compress etc then shut vitualdub down, start virtualdub sellect the 768*576 clip, sellect the divx 4.12 compressor (the settings should be remembered from the 640*480 clip). You will now be able to save the 768*676 clip without any crashes! The final Divx 768*576 clip seems to suffer from audio syncronisation problems in that the audio is faster than the video.
I know the above routine sounds a bit long winded but its the only way I have found this to work without crashes. Has anyone else had the same problems as me or am I doing something wrong.
