Hey,
I wonder, are there any DD+ (EAC3) encoder available?

EDIT: Thanks for the answers.

I know that justin(author of Aften) was working on one, but I don't know much more. Run a search for more info.

AFAIK the only real DD+ encoders come from Dolby, and cost lots of money :)

I have one at work, and it's a real PITA.

They have some nice (pricey) rack mounted servers that watch CIFS folders, encode the input, and pass to another folder. Neat stuff, if you need to do lots of DD+ encoding and have ~$30k to spend :O

EDIT: @jruggle, OK, thanks for the answer, and thanks for Aften AC3.

Thanks. Is it better quality than normal Aften AC3 (does it got the important EAC3-compression code)?
Only in the fact that E-AC-3 can support higher bitrates than 640kbps. Other than that it's roughly the same as Aften with AC-3. E-AC-3 in general does have a little less overhead per frame, but it doesn't make a huge difference.

The patch I made for Aften does not use AHT, enhanced coupling, or spectral extension. It was just a quick test to see if I could get a compatible bitstream. Making Aften better with normal AC-3 is a higher priority than delving into E-AC-3 encoding.

E-AC3 does scale to lower bitrates significantly better than AC3. 5.1ch maintains (close) to full frequency response as low as 256kbps, and in some cases 224kbps from what I've heard.

2ch retains full response at 128 IIRC.

With AC3, you need 384 for half-decent 5.1, and 192 for 2ch.

DD+ should be more complex and efficient than classic AC3, DD+ @ 384 is tied and sometimes higher quality than DTS 1.5, and it's close to AAC @ 320.

That is probably about right if all the enhanced features are used, but those are optional in E-AC-3. I've only come across a couple samples which use AHT, a few that use spectral extension, and none so far that use enhanced coupling.
