Hello everyone!

Please teach me how to transcode dtswav's to mp3surround. I wonder if there is an elegant (one-step, preferrably) solution for this.

My rationale for this transcoding is as follows: I have a big number of multichannel dts-wav files that I want to evaluate before burning them on DTS-CD's. MP3surround files are backward compatible with normal MP3's, so after transcoding I would be able to listen the music during my long rides to work and back.

Moreover, I hope hardware MP3D players will be available in the near future. MP3D is an algorithm of downmixing of 5.1 MP3surround files to stereo. I tried this on my PC and found it exciting.

I would be very grateful to anyone who responds. In exchange, I'm planning to maintain a blog with rs references to all my transcoded albums.

Thank you.

MP3surround files are backward compatible with normal MP3's, so after transcoding I would be able to listen the music during my long rides to work and back.

Without downmixing, what does it matter? Either each mp3 surround file contains both a downmixed stereo file and a surround file or correction file (reducing quality for a given bitrate to be unlistenably bad) or each file is surround as standalone (meaning you hear 2 of X channels) and it sounds nothing like the original. MP3 surround is a waste of time. Do a proper downmix with foobar2000 and LAME to normal mp3 files. If you really must recompress lossy multichannel audio, use AAC.

In exchange, I'm planning to maintain a blog with rs references to all my transcoded albums.

This is a violation of Rule 6, exposes you to liability for copyright infringement, and is an all-around stupid idea.

Thank you Inspector... I respect your opinion on mp3's and attitude to copy rights. However, I managed to do a 2-step transcoding from dts-wav to mp3surround and don't think that the quality loss is that bad. I can send you or anyone interested my original and copy music files. I believe that music in lossy compressed formats such as mp3 or dts can serve only for familiarization purposes and should be distributed freely (dreams.. ;).

By the way, the transcoding flow is as follows: in graphedit - use the file with renamed extension (dts) - ac3filter - wav dest - file writer - 6 channel wav ex file; in command line mp3surround encoder - 6 ch wav ex - bitrate 320000 and quality 1 - 6 ch mp3 surround file.

Maybe one more reason for such transcoding: my Sony Playstation 3 is capable to playback mp3surround files, but cannot do the same with dts-wavs or 6 channel wavs.

Maybe you can try a Dolby ProLogic II mix to encode surround sound to standard mp3.
The output can be played like stereo but many audio equipment can recover (with the DPL II decoder) the surround info.

You can use BeLight, Foobar2000 (with the foo_dsp_downmix component), BeHappy/MeGUI, ...
