View Full Version : Why Not Vorbis 5.1ch?

I recently used the Vorbis 5.1 surround capabilities to encode a 5.1ch AC3. I had no problems and the audio quality was great. I used a 350kbps bitrate. Why don't I ever hear of people using it? Is it well established that say AAC @ 350kbps would produce better quality sound than the OGG format?

Because at those bitrates one might as well keep the original AC3 5.1 stream as it's usually 384 Kbps or 448 Kbps, so no real gain there

Well yeah.. It's 448 so that's almost 75%. It makes a different when it's for 20 min+. I mean, ok.. So then say at 320kbps instead. 350kbps is just an example, not the foundation of which the question is based upon.

The reason I see against wide spread of Vorbis 5.1 is mainly lack of its implementation in HW devices/players. Most of them support AC3, few AAC. OGG is hard to be found there :(
