View Full Version : [Avidemux]Audio Codec not activated

I loaded an uncompressed .avi file to encode it with Avidemux.
x264 video encoding and for audio I opted for Ac3 (Aften) from the Avidemux list.
When video encoding pass finished, I got an error message that there will be no audio encoding because the Aften Ac3 codec is not activated.
I thought that Avidemux had all the ingredients and nothing had to be activated or installed externally?
The container was mkv.
I thought mkv container was compatible with Ac3.

Works for me. What version of Avidemux did you use? What is your platform? Did you compile Avidemux yourself or whose build do you use?

Yes, but the encoders need to be "enabled" when you compile Avidemux. If Avidemux was compiled without Aften, then Aften won't be available in the resulting build ;)
Since version 2.5 Avidemux makes extensive use of plugins. So if you are using Avidemux 2.5, then the Aften plugin must be located in Avidemux "plugins" folder.
I thought mkv container was compatible with Ac3.
Correct.

I have the 2.4 Qt4 version...
I don't remember compiling anything but the AAC codec works ok.
So why just the Ac3 Aften would need something extra?
So I have to paste a Ac3 plugin into the Avidemux plugins folder?
I had installed the Ac3 (acm) codec in the pc. If I go to my Device Manager-> Audio codecs I can see it but I guess the Avidemux can't see that.

Well, you should be able to remeber whether you compiled Avidemux yourself from the source code or whether you downloaded a pre-compiled build :D
So why just the Ac3 Aften would need something extra?
AAC support requires compiling Avidemux with libfaac, x264 support requires compiling with libx264, Aften support requires comping with libaften and so on.
But that really only matters if you compile Avidemux yourself!
So I have to paste a Ac3 plugin into the Avidemux plugins folder?
Nope. As explain previously: Starting with Avidemux 2.5 a new Plugin system is used. Also all the required plugins will ship with Avidemux, so don't worry ;)
Avidemux 2.4 still linked all encoder libraries statically, so there are no encoder plugins for Avidemux 2.4.

Avidemux doesn't give a damn about ACM codecs :p

I just executed an .exe file and Avidemux was installed...
I can't remember anything else.
So you recommend me to uninstall the 2.4.4 version and get the 2.5 where I can add plugins?
Edit:
In the Avidemux folder there is libaften.dll file...

So you downloaded and installed a pre-compiled version of Avidemux :sly:
And if that build was compiled without Aften, then that's not your fault at least :p
(EDIT: You installed Gruntsters build and that one does include Aften!)
So you recommend me to uninstall the 2.4.4 version and get the 2.5 where I can add plugins?
If you install Gruntster's latest build of Avidemux 2.5 (http://avidemux.razorbyte.com.au/#avidemux2.5), then the Aften plugin is already included in the installer - along with all the other plugins ;)
Anyway, Avidemux 2.4.4 should work too...

To install the Gruntster's 2.5 version I have to uninstall the one I have and then install the 2.5 .exe file or could I just perform some kind of update?
I guess the second is not an option, right?

You can install Avidemux 2.4 and 2.5 side-by-side, each in its own install folder. Of course you can remove the old version, if you don't need it any longer...
