View Full Version : 3 issues with Virtual Dub

I am using Virtual Dub 1.8 version to capture in uncompressed avi (uncompressed video and audio).
1st issue is audio-video desync.
There are 2 options in VD to deal with this.
Capture->Timing-> Sync video to audio by adjusting video or
Sync audio to video by resampling audio to slower or faster rate.
Which is the right choice and what impact they have...
2nd issue is image quality related
When I capture a tennis match the horizontal court lines, the white ones look a bit shiny when the camera moves quickly or suddenly.
Is there any internal filter or external I should use to deal with this? It's not very obvious but if you take a very careful look you can notice it.
3rd issue is that the uncompressed avi files that are produced from VD are not seekable and when I load them to Staxrip and Megui after the avs files are created both applications crash...
They seem they cannot handle the avi file created from Virtual Dub...
I'd be grateful if you had any suggestion or solution to the above.

Is your PC fast enough to handle HuffYUV? I use it via ffmpeg (FFDShow's VfW interface->HuffYUV and I set the Adaptive flag to conserve space)? I tried VirtualDub and it produces desync issues no matter how I tried so I switched to DScaler instead as it retains AV sync very nicely. Finally, do you stop the capture properly (manually) or do you wait until you run of HDD space? if it's the latter then the resultant AVI file is not 'correct' and most apps will not handle it properly. I hope someone answers your second question though, outdoor/anime scenes suffer from too much brightness when captured using a composite cable!

My pc has an AMD Phenom II x4 920 (2.8ghz) processor and 4gbs of Ram (800mhz) and 500gbs sata (7200rpm) hard disk.
I stop the file manually, press stop capture. Dscaler is a freeware application similar to VD?
I found out that the avi files produced without desync are seekable but because they are huge (100gbs) you have to wait many seconds until play resumes when you move the bar...
Thank you.
I will download dscaler to check it.

Make sure DScaler supports your capture card/device internally and not through DirectShow.. produces better results that way! It's a shame that DScaler doesn't have a recording scheduler for VCR/s-video inputs though!
You might want to check out HuffYUV too since it is a lossless codec and more efficient that uncompressed AVIs.

Since HDD space is of no major concern you can use the original codec and gain maximum results :)

I think I have tried huffyuv through my capture card software and ffdshow vfw configurator.
How do I check that Dscaler supports my capture card internally and not through directshow?
VD does that? I mean to support the card internally.
In Dscaler Sources it says: WinFast PVR WinFast3200 H (Dshow)...
In Vdub says the same with (Dshow) in parenthesis...
I am trying via my card's software and ffdshow vfw to capture in Huffyuv.
If it does not give me audio/video desync I will keep this set up.
But honest to be the VDub sync video to audio and sync audio to video did not give and desync at least when I tested them in 10 minutes captured files.
The bad thing is that even in uncompressed in some occasions I noticed the face of the player was like a shadow. Like for a sec there was a footprint shade of his face, like a stain on the screen while he was moving...

Well apparently the Winfast3200 isn't listed in DScaler's database. What DScaler basically does is optimise each chipset's settings to get an optimal preview picture (which of course yields to better recording quality). I have no idea what Winfast uses for their chipsets maybe someone else will help with this. There are forums for DScaler but it doesn't see much traffic nowadays. As for Virtualdub it uses the card's Directshow driver but lets you add filters in real-time but I couldn't get over the desync issue.

Winfast 3200H has a conexant chip.
The bad thing with dscaler is that when I choose as video input Component it gives me too much colour distortio... I get pink where yellow should be.
I think with Capture->Timing->Sync audio to video you can work around the desync. I will try it for a 2hours cap to see if it can handle it but in 10 minutes I captured with that setting there was not sync. I can tell it because in tennis matches you just watch the racquet hit the ball and if the sound comes instantly you can tell...

I got a .inf file and tried to install the huffyuv codec to be separate from ffdshow vfw but when I try to install the inf file it asks for huffyuv.dll. Where could I find or build this dll file?

Did you grab it from the URL above? Both archives contain the DLL.

I tried to get it from neuron site but I am so careless cause I always get codecs from freecodecs site and I always seem to forget about this site...
Thank you.
I captured ten minutes with vd and huffyuv codec with sync audio to video by resampling audio. The first 10 minutes seem ok, no desync...
I used
Fourcc: HFYU, (there is an option for FFVH)
Colorpsace: YV12 (there is an option for YUY2)
Predictor: Plane (there is an option for median and Left)
and adaptive huffman
and Store frames to .avi
Would you recommend something else?

When there is a close screening of the player as he moves his head left and right before receiving serve I can see something like a footprint of his head in the screen a bit smoky.
It has anything to do with Overlay or Preview choice?

A list of lossless video codecs.. I cannot recommend anything because I've been using HuffYUV only. As for that effect you mention, could you render it to GIF or upload a small segment of the video?

I will try to upload a small segment or o snapshot...

Predictor: Plane (there is an option for median and Left)
Would you recommend something else?
left should give smaller filesize,
median is not to be used

Thank you. Somewhere I read that median is for optimal quality.
@ Pulsar...
If I use Sync audio to video by resampling audio to slower or faster rate I get no desync no matter the format, uncompressed Avi or huffyuv. And we are talking for 2-3 hours capture. At least the desync is not noticeable.
