Subtitles streams greater than #31

I have found a problem. My Disc "The Mummy" (region b) has 68 subtitles, only the first 31 are listed by tsmuxer and other demuxers. If you put the disc in a player or software player there are 65, I need to force an English subtitle that is near the highest, stream #64 in fact.

Because the highest subtitle stream is expected to be #31 on tsmuxer and others, higher number streams (above #31) are not even listed or copied onto the hard drive so I cant force or even see it of course.

Can anybody help.

In fact only 2 English subs are shown and there are in fact 6. The other 4 are numbers 33rd in list, 44th, 53rd, 64th. There are 68 subtitle streams in total.

Have downloaded media info, its says 32 subtitle streams.

Perhaps the spec is not 32 sub tracks max, perhaps it is 128 or 256 (00-FF).

Check the original Blu-ray AUXDATA folder for *.otf files. It is possible that some of the subtitle tracks you don't 'see' are Text stream subtitles, not PGs. Also - if there is a chance - can you send me your mpls file?

There are 7 .otf files, still not enough to explain 68 tracks, and they seem to be font files. Are you sure the spec couldnt be (00-FF) for sub tracks.

Yes, they are font files and if you send me the mpls file of the movie I'll tell you more... 32 for PG subtitles and the other can be Text subtitles... Yes, PGS+TEXT+PIP_PGs can be a total of 255 but PGS alone should be max of 32.

You can also try to run eac3to agains the mpls file and see what will it say.

Yes, you have 36 TEXT subtitles and 32 PGS = total of 68...

tsMuxeR currently does not support (demuxing of) TEXT subtitles (0x92) and Interactive Graphics (0x91) streams... only PGS subtitles (Presentation Graphics) 0x90.

Still - you have 2 PGs for English. Can't you use these? Some players do not support Text subtitles - just be advised.

No I cant use the other subs, the sub I want is needed and is forced on on the blu ray disc because it is needed to make sense of some parts of the film including the place names.

I tested today Tsmuxer 1.10.1b, but also this versions failed to detect the forced sub streams.

I can confirm, I have tried tsmuxer version 1.10.1 and only the first 32 subtitles are seen (#0-#31) of the 68 subtitles, none of the txt subs are seen. This is on the movie "The Mummy" (Region B).
The forced English subtitle (sub number 65) is of course not even seen.
When you load the stream into tsmuxer, you get the messsage that some items have not been recognised and therefore ignored, i guess these are the txt subtitles

The "problem" is that subtitles from #33 to #68 are in separate streams: the first 32 subtitles are in main movie stream (00000.mt2s), but subtitle #33 is in 00001.m2ts, subtitle #34 is in 00002.mt2s...

tsRemux opens these m2ts streams that only contain the PGS subtitle perfect, but the only optin available are to remux them to .ts, .m2ts and bluray so the problem is the same as I cannot demux the stream to get the .sup

If I try to open these streams with tsMuxer, I get the message of "Unsupported format" and it cannot find any track.

Finally I've tried eac3to which also finds the PGS subpicture, but if I use the -demux parameter I get this error: "The source file doesn't contain any video/audio tracks. <ERROR>"

Do you know any software that doesn't need video/audio tracks in a m2ts in order to demux it?

If tsRemux detects these text subtitles just right-click the subtitle stream and select to demux/save in elementary stream (ES) or program stream (PES).

Text subtitles ARE NOT SUP subtitles - don't confuse both formats. SUP are pictures, Text subtiels are TEXT :)

Ok, lots of thanks for the tip. Extracting as ES results in a 1KB file with no data, extracting as PES I get the subtitles but I don't know wich format they have (I've uploaded the original mt2s and the resulting PES here (http://uploadmirrors.com/download/Q9SIDSZN/00032.rar) so if you want, you can give me a hand with it).

Now I only need to know how can I remux these subtitles with the movie, as for example tsMuxer doesn't support neither tsRemux does (only SUPread streams seems to be supported).

But the files you sent can be converted to SRT :) and then be accepted by tsMuxeR or multiAVCHD. :)

edit: It is the first time I see a text subtitle stream, but it is obvious that it can be converted to SRT, since you have all the text in the .m2ts file... the problem is 'timings'...

I said it is not a big deal to convert the extracted stream (or directly from m2ts) to SRT subtitles.

If you need to change it and re-mux it -then it may be a problem. Of course it is possible just to edit the m2ts file if you want to translate the subtitles or anything...

edit: since I think it will brake the rules of the forum, please PM me with the playlist (mpls) files that refer this text-subtitle m2ts so I can take a look at the timings and check if I can make it generate a simple SRT file with timings (i.e. extract text subtitles from the m2ts to srt)

I'm sorry but no mpls refer to these text subtitles streams, so I think timing is defined in the subtitle itself.

I'm looking to BDedit trying to find how these text subtitles m2ts are linked to the main movie m2ts, but I a neeb and it's quite hard... A debugger similar to DVD-Remake would really help (maybe in a future release ;) ).

No, bdmv files won't help.

m2ts file is referred as normal or 'subpath' in some of the playlist files - it is for sure - how did you find it then if you can't find it in a playlist file? :)

And the playlist is only needed to define the start-time of the playlist, otherwise the information for subtitle display time is usless :) (or it will be off with 0-30 seconds, which of course is easy to correct with Subtitle Workshop).

I haven't used the presentation times from the playlist file, only those in the textST stream, but if you can compare with the movie - let me know if they fit at all.

textST (CLI) (http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/textST/) (630KB) self extractable 7z archive (contains calclib.dll and textST.exe), or if you're using multiAVCHD then you can download just the executable textST.exe (http://multiAVCHD.deanbg.com/textST.exe)(80kb) and put it in your multiAVCHD folder.

Drag-drop your .m2ts or .pes file to textST.exe - it will create a .srt file, or if using command prompt:

textST in_file [out_file]

* in_file must be in .m2ts or .pes format, containing only textST text subtitle stream (one per file)
* out_file if not set, output will be written to in_file.srt

It does quite basic parsing, ignoring styles, fonts, positions and other information, extracting only the text and timestamps.

Lots of thanks for this great software... Unfortunately, the times don't match with the film. I'm not 100% sure, but looking at the times I think that maybe some 50fps -> 24fps time conversion should help.

I compared the output with some .srt subtitles I found on the internet and it seems that it is now okay... It is possible that a start-offset / delay has to be applied, but once you compare it with your movie you will let me know if there is need for adjustment.

Yep, I fixed the dot (.) back to comma (,) as it should be in SRT :) - just overlooked it the first time.

One more thing befeore I leave... I've also ripped the Spanish subtitles, and they look perfect in the SRT, but if I open it in Subtible Workshop (this also happens if I remux the subtitle directly in tsMuxeR) the charset seems to be wrong, for example:

SRT: ¿Qué estáis haciendo aquí? but in Subtitle Workshop or bluray remuxed: ¿Qué estáis haciendo aquÃ*?

What charset are you using when creating the SRT file?

Edit: Well, it seems that the spanish SRT has been saved as UTF8, opening it with notepad and saving it as ANSI solves the problem.

SRT is saved in ANSI and probably it causes the problem... Sadly I cannot change that. If subtitles are okay when you view the file with notepad, just resave it as UTF-8.

You can send me the spanish .m2ts so I can do some tests and see if I can fix it.

edit: Oh, okay :) so it seems to be the other way round :) In fact SRT is saved in the format in which the textST stream is encoded - nothing is modified.

This is the exact IN_TIME value in the playlist file you sent along with the m2ts file. On most discs it is always the same (different for those created with tsmuxer).

I can of course calculate the timestamps with this value... Let's see...

This one just uses the default in_time which is found in 99% of the discs. Doing it that way does not require for the user to look for the specific mpls. Timestamps are taken from the m2ts.

This version should work for any m2ts (from any disc).

There are few things to add to the tool, because it may not handle properly palette changes/colors, but I'll do it later.

I think it is usable in its current state ;)

In the movie "The Mummy" detect the presence of 68 stream from the player software, and the vine that automatically selected as forced, for the Italian language, is the n ° 66

I haven't yet seen a BD with so many subtitles. Maybe the software is right and the "ghost" streams are indeed ghosts, eg refer back to a valid stream, while their payload is 0.

It's easy (when you know)... The subtitles greater than 32 are stored as text subtitles in another m2ts. You can use BDEdit to find which is this m2ts: Go to the movie PlayList and in SubPath you'll get it.

It's easy (when you know)... The subtitles greater than 32 are stored as text subtitles in another m2ts. You can use BDEdit to find which is this m2ts: Go to the movie PlayList and in SubPath you'll get it....

In the SubPath of you PlayList, you can see all the Text Subs you are looking for, and in the windows right of it you can see the m2ts containing each Text Sub when you click on them.

If you want sub number 66, then you should look SubPath 033 and use textST with the m2ts file that BDEdit tells you it's referred in that Text Sub.

With the right mouse button> context menu> Edit on commandline.bat, and you open the text file in which we add the stream reported with BDEdit, after the command textST.exe

As in the example:

and then save

Then double click on commandline.bat, after a few seconds of processing their files appear in srt format

With the availability of the necessary files (calclib.dll, readSUP.exe and textST.exe) I created the file commandline.bat, very elementary.
Which extracts the text file from the stream m2ts, just enter the stream only interested without the extension.

So if you make the language selection automatically are also selected subtitles text format of the same language.

Hello everyone,

I stumpled over this post when I tried to convert my "The Mummy" Blu-Ray into a MKV file using MakeMKV. Of course the TextST files are not playable anywhere (VLC, ...) so I thought of converting them to SSA/AAS subtitles. In addition to just SRT I thought it would be possible to add some sort of formatting or even screen position which may also be present in the original source data. Since I could not find the source code available I started some reverse engeneering on the format. Here is what I go so far:

I used mkvextract to extract the TextST streams from the MakeMKV output MKV file. I used the --fullraw flag on all streams, so maybe some of the header data in the sample is also due to this.

I also tried looking for any specification of the format in the Internet but could not find anything helpful.

Thank you very much. This really helped. I am able to parse the header successfully now. I will post my Java code here once my parser/converter is done. I will try to support SSA/ASS output as well as SRT.

There is one thing I noticed with your code: It seems to be off by one byte at the beginning. I have:

Hello everyone,

The first version of my parser/converter written in Java is complete. Currently it supports parsing of TextST streams based on the raw data and export to SRT files.

Here is how it works:

1.) Use MakeMKV to extract the video, audio and subtitle information into an MKV file.
2.) Use mkvextract (part of mkvtoolnix (https://mkvtoolnix.download/)) with the MKV file created in 1.) and the following commandline to demux the raw TextST data for all TextST stream IDs:

mkvextract tracks <MKV Source File> --fullraw <First ID>:<Filename ID 1>.<Extension> --fullraw <Second ID>:<Filename ID 2>.<Extension> ... --fullraw <Last ID>:<Filename ID n>.<Extension>

3.) Compile and use my parser (source code attached) with the following command line:

java -jar SubConverter.jar -d=<Source Folder> -e=<Extension> -o=SRT -v

This will parse/convert all files in the folder "<Source Folder>" with the file extension "<Extension>".
-o=SRT provide SRT files as output
-o=SSA/ASS will SOON provide SubStation Alpha files as output (work in progress)
-v will output the parsed data on the console

Please note that the code does not come with any form of warranty! I tried this with the German and English TextST subtitles on the Mummy and the Mummy Returns and it worked quite well so far.

Anyways, another question: I did some testing yesterday and found that the timestamps I decoded from the stream do not match with the movie. Do you have any guidance how the "dialog_start_time" needs to be interpreted. Currently, I devide the 5 byte number by 90 to get the amount of milliseconds. Unfortunately, this does not seem to work. Is the factor wrong or is there any sort of delay?

You have to remove muxing delay from PTS
In corresponding mpls you can find "in_time" - this is the muxing delay
Look for first "4D 32 54 53" (M2TS), ignore 3 bytes, next 4 bytes are "in_time". (Should be always from byteposition 0x52)
Divide by 45 und you have the value in ms.
In case of The Mummy e.g.

I added some code to parse all MPLS files from a Disc and list the in_time delays so they can be used to correct the offsets. I am almost done with my code. I need to add some small features/fixes, but for the most part it seems to work now. The ASS/SSA files it produces work quite nicely and they even use the correct formatting/position from the TextST subtitles now (taken from The Mummy Returns):

I am now done with implementing a more complete version which also includes export to Advanced SubStation Alpha Subtitles (ASS) as well as simple SubRip Text (SRT) support. Although the feature set is far from complete, it worked quite well for my "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns" Blu-Rays. Timing and formating seem fine and on "The Mummy Returns" it even positions the subtitle on the top/bottom of the screen depending on its assigned screen position in the original TextST file. (For some screenshots of the result, see previous post)

I thought I share my code and some instructions how to use it so that somebody willing to use or even extend on it can give it a shot and does not need to start from scratch.

Here is how it works:


Use MakeMKV to extract the video, audio and subtitle information into an MKV file.
Use mkvextract (part of mkvtoolnix (https://mkvtoolnix.download/)) with the MKV file created in the first step and the following commandline to demux the raw TextST data for all TextST stream IDs:

mkvextract tracks <MKV Source File> --fullraw <First ID>:<Filename ID 1>.<Extension> --fullraw <Second ID>:<Filename ID 2>.<Extension> ... --fullraw <Last ID>:<Filename ID n>.<Extension>

Now the MPLS files (playlists) need to be analyzed to detect the muxing delay for the subtitle streams. The following command line will do so:

This will also output all subtitles but as formatted ASS files instead of SRT.

The additional parameters (as opposed to SRT output) work as follows:

-fonts Identifies the folder that contains the Blu-Ray font files (BDMV/AUXDATA/*.otf). The fonts will not be included into the ASS file, but the tool will read the font name and put it into the result file. You can manually install them on your device or merge them into the final MKV file.

-width x-resolution of the video material used in the ASS file for creating resizing and positioning information.

-height y-resolution of the video material used in the ASS file for creating resizing and positioning information.


The final ASS files are viewable in any text editor and can be modified to your own liking, e.g. font, size, color, etc . I for example increased the font size a little bit from 54 to 65.

Format: Name, Fontname, Fontsize, PrimaryColour, SecondaryColour, OutlineColour, BackColour, Bold, Italic, Underline, StrikeOut, ScaleX, ScaleY, Spacing, Angle, BorderStyle, Outline, Shadow, Alignment, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, Encoding
Style: Region_Style_0,Arial,65,&H00EBEBEB,&H00EBEBEB,&H3F101010,&HFF000000,0,0,0,0,100,100,0,0,1,2,0,2,1,1,142,0

In sample above each style entry is derived from a region style in the source material. In this case a text box at the top of the screen and a text box at the bottom.

Note: The -verbose flag prints a lot of additional information on the console. This can be used for debugging and analysis.

I must admit that I have not implemented any inline style conversion yet, although I think it can be added. I had only the mummy movies to test with and they do not use inline styles. As soon as I have another day to spare I will look into your file ... Of course you can also take my code and make additions to it!
