View Full Version : why develop x264?

How to make money from x264? What is the business model of x264? What is the motivation for developing x264?

It seems you aren't aware of the OpenSource idea ;)

x264 is free software, released under the GPL. Everybody can use it for free and for any purpose. And everybody is free to contribute to the project.

The developers don't make any money from it. At least not directly by selling licenses or something.

Anyway, it seems that some of the x264 developers also work for companies and I assume they are payed for that :)

Our business model is to pay ourselves by extorting horrific taxes out of the peasant class once x264 takes over the world.

Vive la x264 Révolution!

Until someone starts developing x265... :)

Basically, the Developers are benevolent Comrades working for the noble Cause of the Betterment of the Collective Welfare. Kind of goes against capitalism's driven-by-money principle.

opensource and communism are not related (http://www.slate.com/id/2130798/) (... another arcticle (http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/osrc/article.php/3809221/Bruce-Perens-Is-Open-Source-Capitalist-or-Communist.htm)...). also this forum has rules... and one of them is:
15) Political discussion not directly related to DVD backup issues are prohibited, as is any discussion on religion and religious matters.

x264 developing is sponsored by person who don't reveal his identity to public

lol with all the jokes....

in seriousness, it's pretty much what LoRd_MuldeR said:
mainly developed in the *nix open source spirit with cross-platform support, it's been free to use and develop.

there have been companies which use it and provide bounties for performance boosts or features that they would like to be implemented.

google's summer of code has also been coming into play as of late.

Why pay for what you can get for free! Its simple logic. If we make it faster better and non commercial. Then we can all afford it and benefit from it. There is no better way to stick it to the man. Then by not using their DRM crippled otherwise broken commercial version(s) period.

Divx is failing as far as a note worthy release is concerned. Though I remain hopelessly optimistic that they might rear some head before folding to the overwhelming weight pressed upon them by open source.

hopelessly optimistic

Any way, haven't some of the developers been paid for their time by Avail media to do some work on x264? Like the interlaced support? Wasn't that by request of Avail?

For the same reason we develop software every night, Pinky. To someday take over the world.

I would even go one step further and say it's wrong to put all this effort into a Encoder that is driven by the industry and ;) and more resources should be put into the developing of something like Dirac ;)

Vive la x264 Révolution!
should be "Vive la Révolution en x264" instead...:p

@CruNcher : what do you mean exactly by industry ?
There is a DiracPro version driven by....you know what. ;)

I think you are right. Some company, like Avail, support the x264 development. This is just a guess.

you can get payed, but still remain the spirit of OSnes, read the GPL for example.

Who will pay me if I develop x264?

LoRd_MuldeR

Who will pay me if I develop x264?

Nobody. Your payment is the gratefulness of the x264 community :D

Anyway, if some company is using x264 (and major companies are using x264) and that company eagerly requires feature X to be implemented, they may hire you to add that feature to x264 ;)

Of course it's more likely that they would hire one of the x264 core developers for that job....

The real payment is the satisfaction of a job well done.

Honestly? For fun. It tends to result in much higher quality software than a cubicle code monkey produces because you're doing something you're actually interested in.

I can't speak for the devs, but that's my perspective on these sorts of projects.

Neuron2 feels attacked because he is one of those that you call "code monkeys" and doing it for a living ;)

Mature people take pride in all the work that they do, and do their best for it. Recall the old adage: If something is worth doing, it is worth doing well.

And yes, I don't appreciate a young kid whose promises grossly outnumber his deliveries dissing people who deliver quality code for real projects, whether for personal purposes or related to one's employment.

but maturity is scarce, lately. Don't even react, neuron2. Not worth your time, and you wont make any converts.

This thread was on shaky ground with the silliness, now that the trolling its time to call it done. Besides... I think the original question has been answered. Thread closed.
