What exactly is it for? Why can't the MPEG-2 stream in a VOB just be encoded directly? Does it have to do with alterations between angles or something? I did have some DVD-rips that looped certain areas of the video after like every second. Does indexing solve that or something? You can rip only one angle though so that's probably not it. I do this every time and don't know why...

Lol. Mad confusing stuff. I really just wanted a simple explanation. If it's too difficult to come up with a simple explanation, I guess I'm interested enough to learn all that. Umm.. yeah, thanks.

Indexing is used when you need accurate random frame access. If you are encoding straight through from the beginning, indexing is not needed.

Hmm.. Why is that not possible (the random frame access) with the ripped VOB?

Because the VOB does not have an index.
