I would like to get a large volume hard disk, like the new western digital/seagate/hitachi 1.5Tb or 2Tb models, for archiving and playing back ripped DVD movies. I understand that while many of these large drives are good for storing media, some of them like the Seagate Barracuda 1.5Tb have problems playing back the DVD files, sometimes skipping or lagging.

See link : http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/247119-32-media-playback-problems-st31500341as/

Does anybody here know of or have successful experience with storing a lot of movies (thinking 100~+) on these large volume disks with smooth playback in XP ?

Thanks,
Pojo

A hard drive should generally not have those problems, but I have read that the Seagate drives are having problems in many cases. I'd go with a Western Digital 1TB drive (green version). They are plenty fast for media playback and sells for $99.99 at Newegg. If you MB supports RAID 5, buy 3 of these and create a RAID config.

thanks pele,

western digital seems like the way to go, especially from reading the user comments on new egg an other sites concerning reliability, streaming and overall quality/performance.

Forget Seagate hard drives they got majors and i mean MAJOR mal functions (read HERE (http://arewold.wordpress.com/2007/08/27/having-problems-with-the-seagate-freeagent-500-gb-external-disk-drive/) if you're not convinced), Western digital should be ok though, careful with the usb i would advise a hard drive with the Esata if your computer got such possility.

I have had a Western Digital Green Power drive for almost a year, and it has been very good. I would get more than one if you can afford it since DVDs rapidly fill them up. If you are looking at SSD storage, you could try this (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9131372&intsrc=news_ts_head) too.:p

I was under the impression that WD had the most failure´s out of any manufacturers of HD´s. The higher end models (black caviar, veloci raptor) are a different story.
Seagate had an issue with that particular model, I would say that they are amongst the most reliable out there. Samsung F1 / spin point is worth having a look at.

Less platters is better, good read/write/seek times., and i read that larger does´nt mean better . A 1 to 2 terra does´nt work as efficient as a 640 to 750g drive.

I'm currently rocking out 2 1TB Samsung F1's. They are $99 a piece on Newegg.com They have been excellent hard drives with excellent seek times. I plan on getting two more eventually and setting up Raid5.

since the western digital 2Tb hard disk has dropped to a reasonable price, does anybody know of any HDD media player enclosures that can accommodate one of these ? most of these players are limited to 1Tb...
