If I am going to be backing up my DVD (Standard Def. for now) to my PC ... what OS gets the best speeds with x264 encoding?
xp 32 or 64
vista 32 or 64
or osx 10.5
any info on what is fastest would be great. I am running osx on a new unibody mbp 2.4 w/ 4g ram. i assume its the processor that makes the encoding fast or slow.
so pretty much is there an advantage to using a certain OS over another?
thanks
mike
edit: i am also looking to find the best file type for std def movies. i would like to keep the file between 2-3gigs. i want good quality for a appletv.

linux 64 > windows 64 > anything 32
so using linux to encode my DVDs would actually give me an advantage in speed? which distro should i use?

@Dark Shikari: could you provide some more detailed info on speed benefits, like percentage or so, please? I'm just curious and thinking about my future PC system and such comparison could be of great importance to me, thanks!

Not sure about Windows 64, but it's in between due to the absolutely braindead Windows 64 ABI.

How about Blu-Ray to x264 720p encoding speeds, using MeGui DXVA-HD-HQ profile for a 100 minutes progressive film?
Something like 24-32 hours on Intel C2D 8500 3.16 Ghz, 32 bits OS?
(Wild guess, looking for a new PC and I'm only gonna do like 1-2 encodes a month so if it doesn't take a week I'd like to get a cool and energy efficient dual core CPU as opposed to a hot Core i7, which obviously is much faster)

Wait, Linux actually has a noticeable encoding speed increase?
Mind=Blown.

Why? Did you actually think linux is slower?
x64 bit linux will show the most improvement.
