View Full Version : [SOLVED] Transformers HD EVO plays at Half Speed, Want to Convert to x264 MKV

Hi.

A few details up front: I have ripped the HDDVD of Transformers and have two EVO files.
Software:
Mandriva linux 2009.1 cooker w/PLF packages
mplayer-0.6.7-1mdv2009.1
ffmpeg-0.5-1plf2009.1
mencoder-1.0-1.rc2.23.r28791.2plf2009.1
avidemux-qt-2.4.4-2plf2009.1
avidemux-2.4.4-2plf2009.1
Hardware:
AMD 5500+, 3G RAM

What I've done so far:
Ripped the HDDVD (in windows, using anydvd I think, been awhile since the rip). mplayer will NOT play the EVO files. So, I ran
"cat T1.EVO T2.EVO > T1+2.evo". I then used mplayer to dump the video stream: "mplayer T1+2.DVO -dumpvideo -dumpfile Transformers.mpeg" I end up with a 21M mpeg.

mplayer WILL play the dumped video. However, it plays at roughly 1/2 to 1/3 speed.

So, first question: What's up with the video playback? I can not adjust the speed. I can not fast forward (causes mplayer to crash). Also, smplayer does not show me a total time for the movie. Is there anything I can do to fix the playback?

I get a lot of this during playback:
Debug: MplayerProcess::parseLine: 'pts after filters MISSING'
Debug: MplayerProcess::parseLine: 'No pts value from demuxer to use for frame!'
Debug: MplayerProcess::parseLine: 'pts after filters MISSING'
Debug: MplayerProcess::parseLine: 'No pts value from demuxer to use for frame!'

Second: I would like to get this into a MKV container. For audio I am planning on dumping the audio stream of the DVD. I tried avidemux-qt on the Transformers.mpeg, but the computer locked up at some point last night, and I had to do a hard reset. I did end up with a 556M MKV file, but I also have a 18M .mkv.stat file. When I try to play the mkv, I get this from mplayer:

[johnj@forbin Transformers]$ mplayer Transformers.mkv
MPlayer SVN-1.rc2.23.r28791.2plf2009.1-4.3.2 (C) 2000-2009 MPlayer Team

Hi!

Try using "MakeMKV" to both rip your original HD-DVD (No need for "AnyDVD") and convert it directly to MKV format...

I'll give that a shot. Looking forward to the linux version, tho.

Um...not wanting to sound _too_ stupid, but I think I'm missing something.

MakeMKV fails to open the Transformers hddvd. I do also have aacskeys installed, and it gives this output:
C:\HDDVD\aacskeys-0.4.0>aacskeys.exe E:
aacskeys 0.4.0 by arnezami, KenD00

Volume Unique Key: 12ADA05FB8D0DF5159BDE15FC6E8FD45
TKF Hash (Disc ID): 9767A81F1194DD5AEFDE5E38595D011DF8C5F3CD

What goes in the AACS tab of makemkv?

I'm getting a lot of these with Transformers, and some titles on Serenity:
VC-1 video stream without TFCNTR information is not supported, sorry. Few HD-DVDs use it anyway.
Failed to decode audio/video data for title #0 - invalid mux or internal error, title skipped.

Ideas?

-john

p.s. even king kong fails to open.

You might want to check with the author at:

www.makemkv.com

I believe it's got its own forum there...

Hmmm.....just found a comment from you:
If it's an original HD-DVD with VC-1 video, "MakeMKV" cannot rip it.

From here:http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-144611.html

Am I out of luck here? dumphd dumps the disk, but it's all EVO and MAP files and what not. Which will likely lead back the half-speed issue again.

I am SO confused right now.

Your initial post indicated that the video format is "AVC1" (H.264) - and not "VC-1"...

I successfully ripped my Transformers HDDVD using AnyDVD and eac3to, i know your a linux user but you mentioned in your first post you used Windows to do your initial dump....

Use eac3to to demux the disc to a mkv/raw file and what ever audio format you want...
then mencoder to convert to a h264 stream, then mux the 2 together

This is pretty much what i do for any BD/HD

setarip: Oh. You're right. I didn't notice that. That may have been one of my problems: getting VC-1 & AVC mixed up when transcoding, etc.

On a somewhat brighter note, I found this guide: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1334425
which so far seems to be working. Started with Serenity since I wanted to watch Transformers last night. :-) Ripbot264 says I have 13 hours to go tho. Bugger.

dat720: I'd like to keep this all linux, since my linux box is the 5500+/3G. The windows box is only a 3600+/1G RAM. And I have to use an external HD for this. Not enough HD space. Stinkin' laptop. If this does work, I'll probably setup virtualbox with XP, give it 1.5G ram, and let it run on my desktop box. I'll look at your guide in more detail if what's running now doesn't work.

thanks,
john

Unfortunetly as i've found the best tool for ripping BD and HD's is AnyDVD which obviously does not work in linux, but eac3to does work in wine

I would be setting up VBOX to use AnyDVD and then do the rest via linux

OK. Let me take a step back here.

I just got the EVO file to play using mplayer: mplayer -psprobe 5000000 transformers.evo (video anyways). (It will not play with xine (linux) or vlc (windows: plays a black screen). vlc in linux crashes on the EVO.)

However, it still plays back at 1/2 to 1/3 speed or so. I can FF thru the movie without crashing, but I can not speed it up or down.

I had used anyDVD to get the EVO off the HDDVD originally. I am running DumpHD again, using the newest version, in windows right now. However, that EVO is also playing way too slow:
[johnj@forbin HVDVD_TS]$ mplayer -psprobe 5000000 FEATURE_1.EVO

Is my computer too weak to play this thing?

eac3to.exe crashed twice when it was maybe 80% done. Once writing to a USB drive, and then again over a CIFS share.*

And idea here?

thanks,
john

* Just had a thought. My CIFS share is unfortunately on a clarkconnect box, which for some inane reason has a max file size of 16G. That perhaps could have been the reason for that failure. I don't remember the file size. But the USB drive had roughly 9G free when eac3to crashed.

well, I finished the ripbot264 method and ended up with a complete MKV file. Only have 2-channel audio, but I'll worry about that later.

Rather than the full movie, I just did the autobot trailer. Playing that file gives my correct sound, but 1/2 speed video. I can slow the speed in mplayer, but only the audio is affected. video keeps playing at half speed. Same with WMP.

vlc in windows gives me a black screen and the first half-second or so of audio.

Any ideas here?

thanks,
john

and running eac3to.exe on trailer_autobots.evo gives me a mkv that I can't play at all.

OK. Solved. Not a ripping or encoding problem.

It's a playback codec/video output issue on the linux box.

So, I gave up on Transformers, changed over to Army of Darkness, since it's one 11G EVO:
Decrypted entire disk to HD with DumpHD (winxp). Then ea3cto.exe (winxp). mkvmerge (linux).

AoD is a VC1 track; no 264 on the disc.

So, played it on linux, and it was still full speed audio and half-speed video. Moved it to the slower winxp laptop, and it played full speed. Choppy, since it's borderline HD playback capable, but it was definately the same speed as the audio.

Also, it would not play on my WD HD. Didn't recognize the format, even tho I could've sworn it supports VC1...oh well....maybe in the next firmware update.

So.....did some more digging. While looking into hardware acceleration on my nvidia card, I came upon an article on phoronix, and discovered that I need to run mplayer using the vdpau codec and video output.

the ffmpegvc1vdpau codec still has problems, and AoD continued to play back at half speed.

So, I went back to the autobot trailer MKV, using "mplayer -vc ffmpegh264vdpau -vo vdpau autotrail.mkv" and it played back perfectly. "Who knew?"

Might try and write a bash script to analyze the video and use vdpau options if necessary.

I am planning on running ripbot264 on AoD to convert to h264 and see if that plays a) on my linux box; and b) on the WD HD.

Anyways, thanks for the support.

Thanks, I was looking for this for a while.
I will try to figure out, how actually it works later.
