I've tried to enter doom9 forum using https but instead of that I tried the main page instead. Much to my surprise, I found something VERY different from doom9's front page.
Just check it out.

Page not found. What's your point?

www.doom9.org is load balanced over 5 servers.... the dns has 4 (or 3) A records and a cname (or 2) - I never asked for https so I don't know what the guys hosting the site run on the https port. The forum has https - mainly so that your password can be protected (most useful for admins of course) when being sent over the Internet.
I don't run https://www.doom9.org so to speak

I get the "There is a problem with this website's security certificate". If I click the "be a stupid dingdong and proceed" then the forum opens and looks as per usual but with the https:// prefix.
When I do a similar exercise with my website, I get a "whoo-hoo, your Apache server is working".

Self signed certificate... the issue has been brought up before. A great many webservers, especially inside enterprises run with those certificates - all your browser is telling you is that all the CAs it knows about haven't said I'm trusted.. and that's because I'm not giving them any money and sending them a copy of my ID.

I'm not talking about the self-signed certificate, I've already used it on the forum but, if you enter httpS://www.doom9.org the page that is showed is the following:

<edit>
It may happen only from my location but, whatever I try the mainpage (not the forum which btw has a different certificate) I get the blosphere.net mainpage

so at least I now know which server.. but it doesn't really matter as the site doesn't serve https. The machines aren't only used for my site so if the server serves another site that has https access then what you experience isn't so special.
