Thanks for the new samples , Dean.
Here is the result of testing done on the PS3, using folders created by version 496:
1. AVCHD (both DVD-R and USB HDD)
Video: Played at 1080i with stutter.
Audio: Played fine.
2. .mp4 file with AAC audio
Video: Display showed 1080P. Quite smooth but in slow motion.
Audio: Played fine, so it's racing ahead of video.
3. .m2ts file with AC3 audio
Video: Same as (2).
Audio: With breakup, like trying to keep in sync with video.
Quite a disappointing result. Even file playback did not work.
Thanks and best regards.

Please use latest build (507+). I have them played fine (I think but some stuttering).
Still... bitrate of your 1080@60p may be too high - it was expected. No one said that PS3/SAP will support such format - we were just trying.
Also - file playback is much more limited than BD/AVCHD.

Here are results of testing done on SAP. Nothing worked, as expected.
1. Sony 550: Video was distorted, but audio was fine.
2. Panasonic 30: Stopped at menu.
3. LG 300: Disc rejected. Some reported removing Certificate and a few other folders would fix the problem.
4. LG 370, Samsung 1500 and Pioneer: Some stutter in video playback, and perhaps a little slower than 60P. Breakup in audio playback.
Hope some may find this info useful.

Did you use Blu-Ray disc for your tests? Because if not - Sony could probably do better job than reading from DVD.
I guess 1080p@60fps should be only used for pre/post production and then converted to a consumer standard, but not distributed as is.

24p to 60p is OK, not 60p to 24p. It seems all lower frame rates are compatible with doubling or tripling but not the reverse way. The main reason lies on the original frame which is captured with HD camcorder. The film frame is captured with "global shutter" while HD camcorder captures with "rolling shutter". A frame captured with rolling shutter, should it be 60p or 120p, all suffered from the "rolling shutter" artifact. A 30p HD camcorder movie may be upconverted to 60p without obvious problem but not vice versa. 1920x1080 60p is way beyond the Bluray specification. It is only good for post-processing with "slow motion" effect and may not be OK for down-conversion to 30p or 60i video. Modern technology is way up and beyond the not-so-old past tense of Bluray. In fact, all old 24p film are presented in the movie theatre with double frame or triple frame post-processing. The projector actually does it in 48 frame/sec or 72 frame/sec and the frame rate is not in "progressive" or "interlaced" mode of the TV system. We go to the cinema, watching movie with 48 fps "global shutter" production.

Greetings Dean.
I don't have a BD writer set up yet.
The nominal bit rate of Sanyo clip is 24mbps, with a maximum of 29mpbs. This is lower than the 35.4mbps bit rate of your 23.976 Hz VC1 sample. Did it play well from a DVD-R?
By the way, MPC's internal splitter could not detect the video stream. Would you know why?
Thanks and best regards.

Greetings Dean.
Here's another 24mbps 1920x1080/60P clip featuring a little girl playing the C major scale. Good for testing audio problems.

Thanks for testing. On the PS3, I assume. Would like to know which of the following works/ or does not work:
1. Does the .mp4 file play fine with no audio sync/delay issue in 60P?
2. .m2ts ?
3. AVCHD/BD (ie. burned to BD)?
4. AVCHD/DVD (ie. burned to DVD)?
5. AVCHD/USB HDD?

1) Burned to DVD+RW in AVCHD mode - plays perfectly (in 1080i)
2) Copied to USB drive:
* MP4 file has audio totally out of sync
* M2TS file - audio totally out of sync + stuttering (audio)
* AVCHD mode - play perfectly
There is not much movement in this video (except the hand of the girl and the strange SNOW, snowing in summer time :) ) but in AVCHD mode I can't see any video breaks/stuttering.

I believe you have included an option to create BD in multioAVCHD. I wonder what would happen if this option is selected and the output burned to a BD optical media, will it be recognised as a BD by PS3 or SAP?
deank
16th April 2009, 15:01
Yes, it will get recognized as Blu-ray disc. I have no BD burner and cannot test, but people reported that it works fine ([Blu-ray for BD-R] button) burnt to BD-R or BD-RE disc.

So a BD with 1920x1080/60P video can be created. Splendid.
Is there a volunteer to test it on a SAP or PS3?

No, eac3to will be used when needed. As in this case it fails and ffmpeg is used - hence the success.
mariner
27th April 2009, 17:04
As you can see in the first error message, the whole process failed if eac3to is not selected.
This was no the case in earlier version. Only ffmpeg needs to be ticked.

Yes... I'll remove [x] AAC to AC3 option from the GUI because it is always forced to "on".

Playstation3 plays it. There is no indication at what framerate, but if it was dropping some frames I would've noticed it.
Of course - the test samples don't have a lot of motion, so I can't be sure how it will handle dynamic scenes.
I know that a bitrate peaks of 50-60Mbps (displayed in AVCHD mode, while playing 1080p with PS3) are handled 100%.

So if I generated a 1080p60 MP4 with AC3 audio that plays from the XMB, it should be able to be turned into an AVCHD disc?
I'll have to look at the structure of the files as I found that 60fps required a lot of AVC features to disabled, including CABAC, which isn't good. I also needed to encode with MainConcept (again not good) as PS3 relies on decoding multiple slices in parallel which x264 doesn't support.
I'm downloading one of the sample AVCHD files now and can easily check it's running at 60fps.

I just burned that using ImgBurn and it comes up as a Data Disc on my PS3. I got imgburn to correct it when I fed it the files and it doesn't seem to have worked. How do you burn this?
I can play the files directly from the STREAM folder though and they look great.
deank
28th June 2009, 19:55
Sorry.. it was a compilation to test on a Blu-ray disc (BD-RE).
Still.. files are original 1920x1080p @ 60fps but XMB playback is different than Blu-ray or AVCHD.
If you have multiAVCHD you can simply transform it to AVCHD by dragging the folder and processing it as [AVCHD for DVD].
If you don't have it, use "goBD (http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/goBD-tool.exe)" tool.. it will only patch the index file, so you can re-burn it.
(and please - do not 'let' imgburn to 'correct' or add/remove anything)
And instead of burning you can always use USB stick or MS card or SDHC card for Playstation3.

Hmmm I've exported a PS3 AVCHD structure and copied it to a USB flash drive, but nothing's happening. Does it need to be the *only* thing on the drive. I made a folder called "old" and stuck all the other content I had on the drive in there.

If you patched your index.bdmv and renamed all files to 8.3 (you can do it with AVCHD Manger if you want) and created:
X:\AVCHD\
X:\AVCHD\BDMV <-- here is the folder from the disc-archive
...
8.3 filenames require
index.bdmv -> INDEX.BDM
MovieObject.bdmv -> MOVIEOBJ.BDM
*.clpi -> *.CPI
*.mpls -> *.MPL
*.m2ts -> *.MTS

I see the problem. The files need to be in a folder called AVCHD, so I've put them there. I've run it through AVCHD Manager any way and AVCHD does indeed appear on the PS3 now, but attempting to access it just causes the machine to lock up. I will try to create a short sample rather than the 0.6GB version I have now.

Here is a seven second sample. It is encoded to AVCHD specs, but with CABAC turned off and a couple of other minor tweaks. Navigate to the STREAM folder and it plays beautifully from the XMB, but try to run it as an AVCHD and it freezes the PS3 and you need to turn it off to get it working again!

Hi Dean,
Can you please take a look at the following thread:

It seems like the same 'problem' you're dealing with in this thread (1080p with 60fps) same camera aswell SANYO HD2000.
I seem to manage to convert the .MP4 1080p 60fps to MKV and TS, BUT audio is out of sync. Is that the same with you're tool.
Maybe you can try my samples from : http://www.lirodesigns.com/sanyo
and check if you have audio sync problems ?
Thanks in advance !
